What method are you using to install Windows? Is it a Microsoft disk, a Dell disk or using a "factory install "/image from the HDD?

It sounds like you need to delete/remove the C: partition (drive) before running the installation. Watch the first few screens when you are installing to remove and remake the C: drive (I don't expect you are installing Windows to a different drive).

Googling around I get the impression that this laptop is of 2000 vintage and from what I can gather is not designed for XP. Which OS had you previously on the old drive?

Fair enough, just a thought. :(

Perhaps as Pete suggested there's underlying compatibility issues?

    strike f1 to retry boot

Thanks for the clarification, as an experienced user I'm sure you understand small details can be important.

Earlier you said the BIOS seems to come up alright. Have you checked the BIOS to confirm the boot device isn't forgotten between boots?

    Press F2 on boot.

You have a personal message not relevant to this thread.

I'm not familiar with your computer but...

Boot order/device... Floppy, IDE 0/1, CDROM. That kind of thing.

Give me a few minutes and I'll look up specific instructions and edit this post...

    Edit.

Can you post the Lattitude model number?

Boot order should always be ....

CD-ROM > floppy, if fitted > Hard drive.

Not too sure how to interpret that - try whichever option is not currently selected.
