I have a Maxtor 120gb hard drive and i have tried a couple of time to put it in a new computer, but neather one would take it, the bios comes up. and the win. starts to come up. but it never does. i tried boot disks. and it just won;t come up, so i have to reformat the hard drive, and lose everything. is there some thing in the bios that can be set to recieve the new hard drive.

Are you familiar with the term: DRIVERS

Unless the two pc's are identical, the drive is full of all the wrong drivers...The following should help:

How to replace the motherboard on a computer that is running Windows Server 2003, Windows XP, or Windows 2000

A number of points here .....

Did the hard drive function correctly in the computer from which it was removed?

Does the BIOS recognise the drive?

If the answer to both these questions is yes you should be aware that you cannot install a hard drive with XP loaded (I assume XP - need to know) into another computer and expect it to work straight off. The hardware to which you are attaching it is different and XP maintains a fingerprint of the hardware on which it was installed.

The solution is outlined here .....

How to replace the motherboard on a computer that is running Windows Server 2003, Windows XP, or Windows 2000

You will need to load the chipset drivers for the replacement motherboard too.

Well, that would be a first unless you had identical hardware.

    ;)
