    Hey guys,
I don't know too much about hardware customization and all of that but i've been having a problem...... for about 3 years now. I put together my computer and installed windows xp on it. At first everything worked fine, but always after about a day or two of installing windows the hard drives are never detected when booting the comp. If i unplug the hard drives and plug them back in then they are detected most ofthe time. Sometimes I have to unplug the computer or clear cmos. sometimes only one drive is detected. I have a soyo motherboard, two 80 gb hard drives ( one maxtor one western digital) 512 mb of ram, 2.4 gh pentium 4, etc. also sometimes if the leave the computer idle for a while u can hear the hard drives shut down and i just get a blue screen, but thats rarely. Sorry for the crappy description im not too good with this. Thanks guys.

There could be many reasons for your problems - it is almost certainly hardware related ....

    In no particular order ....

Power Supply unit - could be flakey - do you know what size it is in Kw?

May be a motherboard problem specifically with the IDE controllers - I would look on the Soyo site for an update to the chipset drivers and install them - may not resolve the problem, but will certainly do no harm.

Have you tried replacing the ribbon cables to the hard drives - are these jumpered correctly with the Master at the end of the ribbon? If they are jumpered Cable Select try jumpering them Master and Slave - the C:\ drive should be Master.

Check all connections to the drives and motherboard - remove each singly and plug in again.

I hesitate to suggest a BIOS upgrade as this can be a little dodgy if not done correctly, but it may be appropriate in due course.
