I have Seagate ST31000528AS ( 1 TB ) hard drive on my system, and i am getting a windows message that my drive is about to fail. I have run the Seagate Seatools , and it is also saying my drive has a problem, and it supplied an error code. I have emailed SeaGate to find out what this error code is telling us with regards to the fault in the drive. The system is currently still working fine, so while it is , i want to look at the option of cloning the hard drive, and then fitting the new cloned drive as the replacement C drive. What is the best way to do this, and with what cloning software. What other things will i have to do that will ensure that i have no problems. I'm running Windows Vista on the system.

    Cheers
    Graham.

Hi Graham. You can create a system image of your entire drive using Macrium Reflect which is free for personal use and allows you to either make an image of your hard drive or clone your drive.

Since your hard drive is about to fail would you like me to recommend you a hard drive replacement?

I agree with Evan Omo. I would get the hard drive and perform the image or the cloning ASAP. Do not take any chances. You do not want to lose any of your data.

What exactly does the message say?
In the mean time - BACKUP the important stuff while you can.

Seagate software ie; Seagate Disc Wizard enables you to use the Acronis cloning system and is available to use free by owners of Seagate HD's.
You will need another HD to use any cloning system. Neil.

    hard drive failing

I have made a copy of the drive already, and yes, i would like to know a good drive to replace this drive with. One of the questions i would like to know is once i have cloned the drive, will i be able to do a direct replacement, or will the new cloned drive have a different drive allocation. currently the drive where i have done the copy to is drive K. A copy of the windows error message is in attachment.

If that's your only HD it may designate another Alpha letter, but you can change them in Disc Management after.
I'm not sure but I have recollections that your Partitions may have the Alpha designations. Neil.

The Seagate error code would be more useful.

I have tried to find this test result code on the internet, but no luck. I have sent a message to SeaGate tech services to see if they will tell us what the code means.

I would use the DOS version of the tool instead of the Windows version... Maybe that get's you a 'usable' code...

You need to first, as suggested above, back up, at least your personal data.

Then note that most Seagate drives are warrantied for 3 years, some for 5. So check your warranty status. The fact it fails Seatools is sufficient for Seagate to issue a RMA - if still under warranty.

I have attempted to do a clone of the disk with Macrium Reflect, but it failed at the 80% mark. I have already looked into the warranty of the drive, but is was assigned to an OEM supplier, and as such, they would be responsible for the warranty. But unfortunatly they are out of business, so no luck there. I will attempt another clone run with Macrium Reflect, then run the DOS version of SeaTools, hopefully we will get a usable code from that.

At this point, I would forget about trying to clone or image the disk and simply attempt to copy and paste (a simple "back up ") any "personal" files you don't want lost. These include photos, email contacts, emails, Word docs, etc.

Then dink with the disk and image program.

One thing I really don't like about image programs (and "full" backups for that matter) is they can (depending on the type problem) backup your problem along with your data so you simply restore your problem to the new drive! :( For example, corrupt files and malware can easily be transferred to the new drive if the those disk sectors are readable.

Copying and pasting your personal files individually minimizes that problem.

Ummm, that depends on which "Blue" or which "Red ", "Black ", or "Green ", which packaging you buy (OEM or full retail) and in some cases, which country you bought the product in. See WD Warranty Policy.
