I was experimenting with an old computer that has not been acting right. I tried to run a vista disk on this computer. It has xp pro sp2. I don't have the disk to xp pro. Everything seemed to be going fine. After setup was finished It went to the green screen of the vista login and froze. The computer went to sleep and when I woke it I received this error.

1720-SMART Hard Drive detects imminent failure
Your hard diskkdrive is detecting an imminent failure. To ensure no data loss, backup contents and replace this hard disk.
    Attrivute Failed #203
Initiating Intel (R) boot agent Version 4.1.08
    PXE 2.1 Build 083 (WFM 2.0), RPL V2.74
F1 boot option is at the bottom.

When I do the F1boot It starts all over with the setup screen. What I neet to know is, Can anything be done. besides changing the drive?

I doubt you'll get any better advice than what Smart has already told you. The fact that the new install wouldn't work further backs up the diagnosis. Only you can decide if it's worth the price of a new HD to get it going again.

If it's over 5 years old, you might want to check around for a used HD if you just want something to experiment with.
