How haptics will transform your gadgets

"...a new field of engineering called haptography, which involves recording physical sensations and later playing them back to simulate the action associated with the sensation that was recorded. "

"We are just at the beginning of the "Neo-Sensory Age." Over the next couple of years, extremely lifelike haptics will be integrated into all kinds of devices. "

"All kinds of user interfaces, from car dashboards to refrigerator doors and TV remotes, will respond to our touch by touching us back. "

This article may help in understanding the Windows 8 Metro interface, and the implicit assumption that we will all be using touchscreen devices in the future.

Hasn't that feedback been in joysticks in some games? I've been trying to remember when I felt it. Driving wheel feedback/brake pedal attached to some games. Neil.

Neil, you are right. Sega's Moto-Cross (1976) is credited with the first haptic feedback in a video game. The handlebars vibrated on impact with another vehicle. Tatsumi's TX-1 (1983) added force feedback to auto driving games. Microsoft released the the SideWinder Force Feedback Pro in 1997. Games mimic life. One of the first real-life applications was in aircraft. The "stick shaker" warned of a stall.

hawk22, don't think smellovison is the same thing. The word haptic literally means "to touch ". Smellovision goes back further than TV. There is a story about a silent film circa 1906 in which a cotton ball was soaked in rose oil and placed in front of a fan which blew air over the audience. It is said that casinos use a sophisticated set of scents to put you in the mood to gamble. The difference is that you don't know you are being manipulated. It's not feedback to your input.
