okay got a dimension 8400 with an 80g sata drive. windows lost the config folder so i backed up data and rebuilt using dells recovery cd's. gets past the point where it want the owners name and on the final boot hangs at the windows logo. same thing happens with 2 other sata drives of different sizes. have run all the dell diags and all hdw passes with flying colors. retested memory and h.d. and all is great.

any ideas ??? has me stumped.

Sata drivers were installed? You may also need to run fixmbr from the recovery console.

i just set the bios to ata but usually when thats enabled the install stops way before the where its been hanging but does make sense seeing as all three drives stop at exactly the same place. hopefully this will work.

    thanks whiskeyman

nope fixmbr didnt do a thing. turned off ahci and set to ata and that didnt do anything either. stops exactly the same place with windows logo and about a third of the way with the blue bar then hangs. all 3 drives doing the same thing. really weird. i have no clue.

ok this is weird. was receding all connections to no avail so i started to unplug devices and when i unplugged the dvd and cdrw pow the system booted up and continues with the install.

one of the things the client said wasnt working was the dvd drive so when i put a good one in i checked the pin setting and found the old ones were both set to cable select. when i put the new dvd drive in i set that to master and the cdrw to slave which is normal settings when using the same ide connector on the board.

so what am i missing here hardware setup wise ???

of all things to be wrong after going back to basic i found that the dvd drive was giving bad signal and stopping machine from booting. replaced dvd drive and all is well. very strange.
