graphics boards and AX59PRO motherboard

My custom PC built in 1999 has an AX59PRO motherboard and 3DFX Voodoo Banshee graphics. A recent upgrade to XP Pro works quite well except XP Pro does not fully support the Voodoo Banshee. I would like to upgrade to a better/newer graphics board.

The motherboard supports AGP but just the basic level. I believe all graphics boards on the market today have a higher level AGP and I don't know if they would run with this motherboard. Furthermore I suspect their power requirements would not be met by the AX59PRO.

Does anyone know of a graphics board that would work with this system?

If it turns out that I'll need to upgrade this motherboard, I understand upgrades go better with XP Pro if the new board has a chipset technology not too different from the replaced board. The AX59PRO has a Via chipset. So which motherboards might I consider? (ATX format)

Here is a pretty good card that supports 1x AGP:

I don't believe this is true. No matter what new board you get, you should boot from the CD and run a repair installation before attempting to boot into Windows. The new hardware will be detected.

So, find a board you like. Do you plan on using the same processor or are you looking for a board with it included?

Here are some bundles (I imagine you want the bundle since Super 7 motherboards are getting hard to find):

If you haven't discovered this site, it has a lot of drivers for Voodoo cards written by gamers who don't want to let go, and who want to continue to use Voodoo cards, even in XP. Search for "voodoo driver" on this site:

    Thanks, Abraxas.

As you indicate, there are levels to how I can respond to this problem.

The lowest level would be to get a new driver from voodoofiles. I had explored that and for some reason I cannot recall, I was troubled by it and never downloaded a driver.

Your suggestion of a graphics card seems the right thing for me. I went to the Tiger Direct site and ordered the GEForce2 MX200 as you suggested. There are faster and newer boards, but I want to maximize the likelihood that the new card will not be too demanding on my motherboard and this seems to be a great choice. Great price too! Thank you!

As to the motherboard upgrade, that would be yet a higher-level response to the problem. Not looking for trouble or extra work, I will not be changing motherboards unless this new graphics board requires it. Or, later, when new applications require higher CPU operating speeds.

But on the subject of motherboards, my reason for thinking the chipset technology should resemble the replaced one was just that I saw a statement to that effect on a MS page somewhere. Anyway, you seem to have given me some good bundles to consider if and when the time comes.

    Thanks very much, Abraxas!
