[Resolved] Google results redirecting to spam sites

Hey,

As of today, I've been having a problem with my Google search results. Every once in a while, clicking a search result will automatically cause my open window to redirect to a spam website, like monstermarketplace or something similar. This has been frustrating to say the least. MalwareBytes didn't find any problems. Googling this problem gave me links to other people on this site with similar problems, but I thought it would be best if I made my own thread.

I don't ask forums about removing malware very often, so I hope I have everything you asked for Thanks in advance for you help.

Download ComboFix by sUBs from here, saving the file to your desktop.


Disable realtime protection applications as they sometimes interfere with the tool. Check this link for your applicable programs.

• Close all open programs and windows
• Double click ComboFix.exe and follow the prompts.
• It may reboot your computer and resume running when you logon. Wait for it to complete. When finished, it will open a log for you. Post that log in your next reply.

Note: Do not mouseclick combofix's window while its running. That may cause it to stall

**NOTE - I recommend you allow the Recovery Console to be downloaded and installed if or when prompted.

I had one small problem deactivating my protection applications: I use Spybot TeaTimer but I couldn't open Spybot S&D to properly disable it, so I terminated the program manually while ComboFix scanned. After ComboFix rebooted my computer, TeaTimer started running again. I don't know if that caused any problems, but here's the log.

Close all other windows and programs. Now drag the CFScript.txt onto ComboFix.exe and drop it, using the left mouse button. Combofix should run and may reboot the computer when it's done. A log will open when it's complete. Post the contents of that log here.

Please do not click on the ComboFix window while it is running a scan. This can cause it to stall.


Please note that I have instructed CFScript to collect some files. This means that when ComboFix finishes, you will be prompted to allow ComboFix to upload a zip file that was created. After running ComboFix a second time, I was never prompted about a zip file However, my Google results redirecting problem appears to be gone (thank you so much! Click Start>Run and type cmd then hit enter to open a command window. Right click in the command window and select paste. The command window will close on it's own.


Now do an online scan with Kaspersky Online Scanner

Click Accept, when prompted to download and install the program files and database of malware definitions.

• Click Run at the Security prompt.
• The program will then begin downloading and installing and will also update the database.
• Please be patient as this can take several minutes.
• Once the update is complete, click on My Computer under the green Scan bar to the left to start the scan.
• Once the scan is complete, it will display if your system has been infected. It does not provide an option to clean/disinfect. We only require a report from it.
• Click View scan report at the bottom.
• Click the Save Report As... button.
• Click the Save as Text button to save the file to your desktop so that you may post it in your next reply.

**Note**

To optimize scanning time and produce a more sensible report for review:

• Close any open programs.
• Turn off the real-time scanner of all antivirus or antispyware programs while performing the online scan.

Post the Kaspersky log here.

 

I uploaded the zip file you requested, and deleted the file with cmd, but I'm having some problems running the Kaspersky scan. The first time I ran it, it stopped scanning about 5 hours in, at 91%. The second time, I left it on overnight, but when I checked it 7 hours later, it had stopped scanning at 47%, about an hour into the scan.

Lets run a different tool then. This tool tends to be quite aggressive, so please be sure to configure it exactly as listed below. I only want to see a Report of what it finds.

Download Dr.Web CureIt to the desktop:

Doubleclick the drweb-cureit.exe file and click 'Start' to run the express scan. This will scan the files currently running in memory and when something is found, click the yes button when it asks you if you want to cure it. This is only a short scan.

• Once the short scan has finished, we need to change the default settings.
• In the Menu Bar at the top, click 'Setting'>Change Settings.
• Click on the Actions tab
• Using the drop down menus, change each item under Objects and Malware to [color= "Blue"] Report[/color]
• Next, 'tick' Complete Scan.
• Click the green arrow at the right, and the scan will start.
• Click 'No to All' if it asks if you want to cure/move the file.
• After the scan has completed, in the Dr.Web CureIt menu on top, click File and choose Save Report List
• Save the report to your desktop. The report will be called DrWeb.csv
• Close Dr.Web Cureit.
• Post the contents of the log from Dr.Web you saved previously in your next reply.

 

The log opened in Excel, I just ctrl+a, ctrl+c the contents of that, hope that's ok To be honest, I'm actually surprised to see those two .mp3 files on the list They're from my friend, he came over to back up his PSP data on my computer and must have had those (I know, I know, the "It's not mine, it's my friend's!" excuse but it's 100% true).

Delete the following infected files.

Click Start>Run and type ComboFix /u then hit Enter to uninstall ComboFix and remove the files it has quarantined. This action will also reset the System Restore points, removing any infected files there as well.
Verify the C:\Qoobox and C:\ComboFix folders were removed, as well as the C:\ComboFix.txt file.

Delete dds.scr from the desktop.
You can delete any other logs that were created/saved too.
Empty the recycle bin when done.

Uninstall all old Java components via Add/Remove Programs then install the latest JRE 6 Update 12 from here

That should finish things up. Let me know if any problems persist.
