Google Reader will be dead as of July 1, and the Internet is not happy. One day after Google announced it's shutting down the popular news reader because "usage has declined," fans shared their grief on Twitter, and sought a reprieve by posting petitions on Change.org.

"For Internet addicts and bloggers alike, Reader is unique," TechCrunch's Matt Burns lamented. "Leveraging the power of RSS, Reader effortlessly pulled content from countless sites, curating a personalized view of the Internet that syncs between devices. "

Google Takeout will let you export your subscriptions into an XML file, which is then used by other RSS reader services to import your feeds into their service.

Problem is, what free services out there will be just like Google Reader? I loved the minimalist UI of Reader--no ads, no "magazine" style, just a good old fashioned RSS reader.

The few places I've tried in the last few days just aren't as good. One that I thought would be so, ended up limiting me to 12 feeds unless I get a pro account.

I'm hoping that Digg's service (they said they will put it out before July 1) will be a worthy replacement.

Barring that, I'll probably d/l a program that will do this for me. But I like using an online service, as often I click on related links in the article I'm reading, so its incredibly convenient to have it in a browser, where I can easily bookmark it.
