Google Earth won't load

Running Win XP PRO SP 2 ,4Gb Ram, Athlon II x2 250. After years with no problems, yesterday GE froze, multiple reloads failed to solve problem so today I uninstalled and attempted to reload however after running GE setup, the setup window says "installing connecting to internet" then the window remains blank with no file download activity.(Left it for over an hour).
I know that there is no problems with the connection as access to the net through Chrome is still working as usual.
Help with this problem would be appreciated.

 

Have you tried another browser to install it? Something like IE of FF?
