By default an account with User status cannot perform Disk Defragmentation and CheckDisk. However, I was told using Group Policy in Windows XP Pro, I can make this exception. But I can't seem to find out where is this reference in GP to make this modification. Any tips?

Incidentally, why the User account may not do Disk Defrag? I don't see any security risk with this function in Windows. Do you?

Start\Run\(type in)gpedit.msc\User Configuration\Admistrative Templates\Windows Components\Microsoft Management Console\RestrictedPermitted snap ins. Scroll down the list. Hope this is what you need.

Ok, so now I have enabled Disk Defragmenter, what's next? Where do I go to give the Users account group or even specific user the permission to do disk defrag? Man, this is complicated.

Start\All Programs\ Accessories\System Tools right click on Disk Defragmenter\Properties\Security. Hightlight the User you want to grant permission to then choose what permissions or rights you want to grant. If you can't find the securities tab in Defrag Properties then open any folder/file go to Tools\View. Scroll down to the bottom of the list and uncheck Use Simple File Sharing(Recommended).

Sorry, it didn't work. I am fairly sure the permission is in GP. I think I have seen it demonstrated in a classroom once.

I think the one pictured may be the one you are looking for but from the title it looks like disk defrag may be lumped in with some other features that could do damage. Had very little success trying to get clarification for this item. You probably want to play around with it a bit before opening it up to joe-user.
