Firstly hello I have been recommended to post my query here by a friend.
I am not very clued up on upgrading pc's and don't really know where to start. I have found the motherboard to be this

Board: Gigabyte Technology Co. Ltd. 7ZMMP 1.0
    Bus Clock: 100 megahertz
BIOS: American Megatrends Inc. 62710 07/15/97

I was wondering, if you know what the most this motherboard will take? I don't mind even changing it if need be. As you may gather I am rather green when it comes to pc's but not totally stupid. Any help would be gratefully appreciated

    Many Thanks
    Seph (Paul)

This was the best I could find.

    GA-7ZMMH

CPU list for GA-7ZMMH Appears to max out at an AthlonXP 2600

    Quick Summery:

Socket A for AMD Athlonâ„¢/ Duronâ„¢ 200/266 MHz FSB processors.

FSB can be set to 95/100/103/105/110/115/133 MHz

    Chipsets - VIA VT8365A (KM133A) / VIA VT82C686B

    Supports (2) PC100 / PC133 3.3v SDRAM and VCM SDRAM up to 1GB total.

LOL - Paul, you could have told them it was me that pointed you to the site.

I freely admit here or any place else that I am a complete idiot on hardware but knew there would be some on here who could help you out.

Hi Seph, welcome to this board. Your friend sent you to the right place if you are looking for help. (computer help that is)

It appears that the CPU speed on that board has to have the corresponding correct BIOS. You said:

Earliest BIOS posted on the site that Newt claims he told Paul about :D was published in 2002. and latest BIOS version is F11b. It appears a BIOS flash is in order if you intend to upgrade the CPU.

Good luck, and don't hesitate to post any additional questions or become a contributing member.

    Martin

Edit: After reading your post again, I see you are also asking if MOBO change would be desireable. This board certainly would be fast enough if you upgraded to AMD's 2600 Athalon and 1024MB of memory, but there are a couple of drawbacks. One, it has only 3 PCI slots, If you are into upgrading, those slots will be quickly used up. Two, the AGP 4X is adequate, but if you are in to gaming, you'll probably want the latest 8X AGP video card. Three, the board does not state it is XP compatible, you certainly would want that.

What I'm saying, is that it doesn't appear to be "State of the Art "

My chipset is this one VIA VT8363 Apollo KT133 not the one you stated.
I am very green at upgrading so you will have to bare with me. I cannot find my board anywhere whether this is because it is obsolete I don't know. There are a few that are close but not everything matches up. I think I might end up buying a new system as I have no idea where to start. As for upgrading the bios, I have no idea how to do this. PLEASE HELP

LOL - Martinr, Paul = Seph and all I did was tell him to post his hardware issue here because I'm a hardware idiot. I'd been helping him with software issues on a general discussion section of a fishing forum but then he asked about a problem with that nasty stuff you can actually touch and feel. :D

Seph - the vendor's site for your BIOS will have a link to their most recent firmware version and specific instructions for doing the update. Often it's as simple as putting the file on a boot floppy, booting the system from the floppy, and running the update. But they always put instructions with the update.

BTW - 'firmware' is just hardware you can update with software.
