    WIN 7 32bit, 4 GB memory. OS only on a 64GB SSD.
Problem is that when I click to shut down the computer it only partially shuts down, leaving the power light on an the optical drive will open and close.
I have tried a number of settings in the BIOS, including the optimum default one, to no avail. Interestingly it shuts down properly for one time only if I access the BIOS and close it again without making any changes.

A fix would be most appreciated. Now there's a challenge for the No. 8 hats!

Hi Ishmael, a little more info would help.
    How old is your m/b?
Is it a Brand name comp or Home build?
Have you made any recent changes to your system?
What is the Power setting in the OS set to? Neil.

If you shut down from Safe Mode do you have the same problem?

    Here's more info.
I built this PC in early 2014 from new components, inc the mobo & Intel i5 CPU. It initially had Win 8 64 bit on it, which I didn't like, at than time it would shut down normally, the shutting down issue started when I upgraded to Win 8.1. The OS and all the programmes were on a 64GB SSD. After some time I replaced that Hard Drive with another SSD and installed Win 7, 32 bit on that, plus the programmes, (that is still the setup). The shutting down problem remained.
    Power setting is Balanced.
Problem remains when shutting down in Safe Mode.

What happens if you disconnect (physically) the optical drive?

If the computer shuts down normally, try to connect the optical drive to a different SATA-port.

I go along with Christer's suggestion as it's possible you have disturbed a connection when changing your drives.
I would thoroughly recheck ALL connections especially your system panel connectors. Neil.
I'm also wondering whether the change from W8.1 (UEFI Boot) downgrade to W7 32bit (Legacy Boot) may have some effect on your problem.

Thanks everyone, I will try disconnecting the optical drive and check all the connections.
I have also noticed that it shuts down fully if I do a re-start.
I should have explained at the outset that to start the PC I have to either hold down the power button until the power light goes out or to switch the power socket off.

Good news. I ran the Gigabyte App Centre (it was on the CD that came with the motherboard) and it said there was an update for the BIOS. I downloaded and installed that update and now all seems well as the computer is shutting down fully and the power light goes out.
It will be interesting to see if those two pesky windows updates will now install, but that's another story.
Here's a heartfelt thank you to all who responded to my call for help, it was most encouraging.

You're welcome ... :) ... and fingers crossed for success with the updates too.
