We've got 2 computerslinked via crossover, 1 running Win98se using a 10Base network card and the other has XP Pro with onboard(ASUS A7V600) Gigabit network. The problem is the 98 computer keeps dropping of the network, so I looked on the net for an answer and saw this '''The packet of Gigabit data transfer over Ethernet is different from 10/100Mbps Ethernet'''. Can someone explain this please.

I dont know about that message, but i suspect a fix would be to specify the Media type.

Most if not all NIC drivers are shipped in auto mode. This is usually fine, but sometimes you have to tell the card which media type to use as not all autonegotiations are equal. :p

The exact location/naming logic to specify the media type (sometimes called transport type) is different for each NIC, but should always be in the same basic location.

In the Device Manager of each machine find the NIC, right click and select properties. Under the advanced tab there should be some options for you to change. Look for one called "media type" or possibly "transport type ". This option will offer one or more of the following choices:

    Auto
    10BaseT
    10BaseT FullDuplex
    100BaseT
    100BaseT FullDuplex
    1000BaseT
    1000BaseT FullDuplex

You will have to specify "10BaseT" for your media type as this is the best that you can achive with a 10base network card and a crossover cable. The Win98 box will probably want a reboot. Do so and Bob should be your mothers brother.
