I often transfer 15 - 150 gigs of digital photo's over my 10/100 home network. This can take up to 40 minutes and I want to cut down on the transfer time. I have also had some file errors (RAW pics that could not be converted to TIFF's) after the transfer.

Am looking at a Gigabit network and have bought Intel PRO/1000T nic's (although I think I should have gone for PRO 1000 MT's but did not have the insight last week!).
I am considering the DLink DGS-1008T switch.

    http://www.dlink.com/products/switches/dgs1008t/

Is this switch adequate (quality) or should I wait until the more expensive one's drop in price?

If I plug my Linksys BEFSR41 router

(edit note - bad link repaired. Newt)
into a normal port of the D-Link, will it affect the speed of the 1000 ports? Reason for this quesion is that I cannot find mention of an uplink port on the D-Link spec sheet.

    At present I am using:
SMC8011CM-B Cable modem into Linksys Router WAN port.
Linksys Router uplink port into normal port on
    OvisLink FSH8TX 8-port 10/100 switch.
    http://www.ovislink.ca/fsh8tx.htm
All machines are connected to the OvisLink switch via D-Link 538TX nic's and they run W98SE (X2), W2K Pro (x2), XP Pro (x3) and occasionally my notebook with XP Home.

(And yes, this is my home network :))

    Thanks for feedback

No firsthand with any of the gigabit equipment so can't help there.
The answer here is no. It will not affect the speed of the Gb devices unless they are plugged into ports on the switch side of the BEFSR41 which will continue to run at the max 100Mbps it is designed to handle.

    Naughty...

    I uh mean Jaws...

I have some experience in seeing and using 1g. But not installing. This was at a clients. I asked and they said the installation was stright forward they had no problems. That it was fast. They use CAD!

As for the brands they are good reputable brands at 10/100 so I would trust them.

Curoisity! Do you mean 150 megs? If 150G what kind of hard disks do those bad boys have?

    Mike

If we help you with this can we get a free Xrated DVD?

My most humble appology for the incorrect link to amateurvideo site.
I honestly do not know how it got there and have never visited that site before, nor am I going to.
When I posted the LINKSYS link it was directly from their website and my other posted links worked fine?
If possible, the webmaster (when he/she reads this) must please remove the offending link.
I am very sorry. Things like those do not belong here.

As far as the "150" - no I did mean GIGS and not megs.

These are mostly backups of digital photography files in various formats of which the TIFF's use most space.

The storage are on RAID systems with 200gigs (4x100 gig HDD's in RAID1+0) and another with 333gigs (4x120gigs HDD's in RAID 5 system)

I am trying the LINKSYS link again

No problem with the strange link. I replaced it with the good one you just posted so the original location works now.
