I was having trouble opening my gif files, I reffered to post: http://www.windowsbbs.com/showpost.php?p=99521&postcount=3 to fix it but now that it opens correctly it stil does not show as a nextention in my file types. I went there to fix the icon to be a gif icon and couldnt find it.

shelga18--I am working from memory since I no longer run Win98.
When you are on the File Types window you should find a button (top right) saying "New Type ". Click on it. The next window will ask you to fill in various things. In the top line (Description of type) you would probably put GIF Image, next line would be .gif. I think you can skip the next line, but if not click the down arrow and you should find "image/gif ". Click on that.
In the big box write Open, then click "New" underneath it.
In the next window, you would enter "open" in Action line if it is not already filled in. And then for the Application Used box, click Browse and navigate to the graphics editor you want to use, such as Internet Explorer, Irfanview, MSPaint, etc. I think you then click Open, and the rest of the directions should be easy to follow.
When you are finished it may take a reboot.
Go back into File Types and I hope you will find GIF Image in the list. (If you highlight it and click Edit, then Edit again on the next window you should see a window looking like the attachment--if you have used IE as the graphics editor.
    Good luck.

    Stolen from Mark (I think)
In Windows Explorer, right click on a .gif file. Click "Open with "
Browse to your graphics editor and check "always open with ... "
If you do not get the "open with" option, hold down the shift key when
you right click the .gif file
    regards

Apologies - I did not look at the link referred to in the post by shelga18.
Oddly enough, the "Open" registry entry here was using Internet Explorer,
when I checked it. I do not have a lot to do with .gif files, but IE hardly seems appropriate to open one - view, yes, but open IE for editing ????
So I set all the options to Irfan View. For animations I use Paintshop Pro.
    regards
