I read Christer's post on Ghost Start Service dated Jan.29,04, I know how to turn this service off, but I would like to know if this service would affect any other services.

I know that this service depends on RPC., I do not use Norton Ghost at all, due to the fact the program takes up to much resources. When I installed Norton SystemWorks 2003, ghost was included, I only use Norton WinDoctor and Clean Sweep. If I, stop ghost start service will it affect those two utilities.

In the application logs, event id: 0, in source (Ghost Start Service) can not be found. The local computer may not have the necessary registry information or message. DLL files to display messages from a remote computer. You may be able to use the /AUXSOURCE = flag to retrive this description; see help and support for details . The following information is part of the event , service started.

I don't want this service to run, but if I - Stop this service, I don't want other services affected.

    Thanks

    Winnipeg,
    welcome to Windows BBS ...... :) ...... !

No other service depends on Ghost Start Service. All I know is that it gets installed with Ghost (stand alone or included in SystemWorks) and runs in the background. Exactly what it does is a mystery to me.

Check out Ghoststartservice for more information.

I never run Ghost (to create or restore images) from within Windows but only from the Ghost Boot Disks. Ghost Explorer runs well from within Windows with the service in manual (or disabled, I think).

This program Ghost Explorer, I take it, is the same as Norton Ghost.

I would have to download Ghost Explorer, for it to be on my machine then.

So, since I don't have Ghost Explorer, I can stop this service.

I was worried that if I stopped this service it might effect IE. someway.

I thought it might be using dll's that windows uses.

    Thanks

Ghost Explorer is a utility included in the installed Windows version of Ghost. You can use it to browse your images and do certain tasks. Which tasks depends on the file system (FAT32 or NTFS, the latter being more restricted). In Windows Explorer, you browse the contents of a drive but in Ghost Explorer, you browse the contents of an image of a drive.

Disable Ghost Start Service via admin tools/services. If set to disabled you will still be able to use all functionality of ghost, ghost explorer, and all other symantec products. GSS is basically "preloading" parts of ghost when the comp boots & afaik, that's all it really does. (+ the icon is cheezy looking!)

Oh no ... ... it isn't and long may it live! Ghost 2003 has saved my system a number of times and probably millions of others.

The service is another thing, though ... ;) ... and you're welcome!
