I have tried to install win 98SE over win 95 but it will not accept a fresh install and asks for upgrade disk. Can I get rid of Win 95 on this machine so I can install Win98SE without losing personal settings? The Win 98SE I have is a complete installation package including boot floppy.

I far as I know, if you wipe out 95, you'll loose everything. Your best bet is to copy down your setting and start fresh. Format your drive, FDISK, and install 98.

When you installwhat exactly is asking for an upgrade disk? If I am not mistaken Win98 installs right over Win 95 without problems, but I may be wrong.

    Win 95 removal

It is Win 95 which is saying that my win 98(Full and complete insta;;ation pack) CD and boot floppy can not be installed and it asks for a win98 upgrade disk.

Look in your windows folder for a file named win.com and rename it (maybe win.old). Then either boot from the win98 cd or a win98 floppy boot disk and run the installation from there. If for some reason you quit the installation prematurely you'll have to rename the file back to win.com from dos before you can boot back into 95.

    This is what you do.
When you boot up with the floppy, choose CD ROM support. Before the A:\> appears, there will be a message giving you the drive letter for your CD, it will not be the usual letter, it may be E:. Use this letter in place of the X below.
Type in these commands at the prompt, the first renames the file, and the second starts windows setup.
    ren c:\windows\win.com win.old
    X:\win98\setup
