    Hi Netscape Folks.

I am getting bored and new something new to make or break.

I would like to have a go at a Netscape product. Have use NS some time ago and liked it.

I have no concern about E-Mail ( I don't think anyway ) as it is as of this time completely separate for any Browser. Alias Eudora and MailWasher.

But I do have some questions.

I am running XP Pro on a machine that I built.

Which one would be the better one to start out with ?

Will my present AVG 7 anti Virus be sufficent ?

Will it cover both IE & NS ? Or will I need to installed it special ?

Is it possible to install either FF or NS on a partition other than C ?. I ask that because some things do not work properly when not on C:. And I am a bit short of room on C:

Could I possibly have a go at it on one of my 98SE machine first ? Just in case I mess up ?

And I find 98SE a bit easier to mess with new things on.

From my own perspective, I "think" you would find Firefox to be the easiest to which to adapt. It comes very simple "out of the box" so to speak when you first install it. Later as you grow used to it you can add some extensions and change the skins to find one that is more interesting to your eyes. The new Netscape seems to me to come with a fairly high learning curve. I'm not trying to discourage you but I have to admit that I've found it exciting and frustrating at the same time. Best regards.

:) I was just asked a question by a VERY close realtive. :)

The question was. " You are not going to mess with my machine are you ? "

Heck no Dear. I would not even think about doing that.

In other words I KNOW better

Thanks James that is what I was looking for. But DO NOT ( I wouldn't ) put it past me to go for broke and go for NS 8. PLus there is no E-Mail at all on the machine I would be messing with. At least I do not THINK there is.

I should be able download what ever here ( much faster ) and burn to a CD. Then go for it.

BillyBob: To answer one of your questions, you should be able to install NS in a drive other than C:\ without a problem. I'm running a Windows XP Home system and have NS 7.1 in my E:\ drive and it works fine.

It's fun to mess around, so if you do go ahead and take the plunge, let us know how it works out.

Go for it. But, don't complain if you have problems. Although you can send feedbacks from Help. I have sent four feebacks in the two days that I have had the critter. A couple of them solved themselves. But, if you don't need mail NS8 can be fun.
Originally you asked if AVG7 would be ok. Sure, as it is updated at least 2-3X/wk. But you can get into all sort of problems with any software.
For excitement, I would like to reply to some "phishing" attempt. But, I would be using a real e-mail address. It is very tempting, when you get e-mails to confirm account information from places you have never been within 1000 mile.

I downloaded FF at size 4,827,968 on my HD

I went for NS 8 and got a NSB setup file with a size of only 304,216.

Did I get the right one for NS 8 ?

I can't speak for Netscape, as I haven't tried to install it, but the answer is definitely "yes" for Firefox. See my screenshot.

Edit: I should have noted that Firefox does place a couple of folder/files in C:\Documents and Settings\<username>\Application Data\Mozilla\ containing plugin data and telling Firefox where to look for user profiles.

Yes. As I understand it, it's just the installer file, which will download and install the program for you.

    Thank you.

I will see how much damage I can do maybe later today or tomorrow.

We have some of my Wifes family from her 1st Husbands side here that we have not seen in at least 15 years.

But BEFORE I DO ANYTHING. I will make sure that my System Restore files exist and/or are up to date.

I messed up ONCE and that is enough.

That's the stub installer which does an online install. You might prefer the Full Install, which is the offline installer. It's located here:
    http://browser.netscape.com/ns8/download/download_alt.jsp

    The file is 13.5 MB.

    Thank you Ramona

    You are right.

And the 13 meg file is in place.

I do as little online installing as possible.

The one time I did try the Internet went down. I do not think I need to say more.

Let me change Internet to the WHOLE cable system. TV and all went down.

OK. My first question ( not a problem yet ) is how do I get the Audio background
to play in Sites Such as this one

It says I need Quicktime 6. ( I think :) ) But it says it is not available.

My own Site the Audio works fine. It imported my IE Favorites just fine.

I really do not need to ( I do not think anyway ) with E-Mail or Weather. I have both as separate programs.

BTW. I am thinking I am going to like the Tabing bit.

Gotta go do some more playing. It is WAY too early to make a true and honest opinion of it.

    BillyBob,

That is a WAV file, and I can't hear it on any of my browsers, so there might be something wrong with the code...

    HMMMMM !!!

That is odd because I get the Audio when going to the site with IE.

AHHH ?? Possibility or Thought/ Your call. NS may have .wav files associated with Quicktime and not Media Player.

I think that because it does. Tell me that I need Quicktime. Then tells me it is not available. ?????

But maybe it does use Quicktime in IE.

BTW. I got the weather working just fine. Can't ( at least so far ) get as close to home as I can with WeatherBug it self. But close enough.

    YAHOOO !!!! I GOT IT

The Audio is playing in the background as I write.

Be it right wrong or just plain indifferent.

I clicked on what looks like a small shiield in the tab.

Changed the site to us IE and actvated ActiveX.

I may need to do this with other pages at that site . I sure will be finding out.

I am off to see what more I can do.

As of this moment A HAPPY

    Hi BillyBob,

Long time no talk! I tried the site and it plays fine for me with the new Netscape. I don't know which player is playing it though. I do have WMP10, Quicktime, and RealPlayer installed. I also had copied the Plugins and Components folders to My Documents before uninstalling Firefox. Then I selected all and moved the files to the cooresponding Netscape folders, choosing No if asked to replace an existing file. Netscape is rendering in Firefox mode, as I set it to do that for everything. (If a site looks funny I'll switch it myself.)

I didn't like the defaults where nearly everything seemed to be rendering in Internet Explorer mode. If I wanted that I'd use Internet Explorer! Just click the Security Center up top to adjust things. I left the use Netscape Trust thingy active, but changed the defaults to all "I'm not sure." That loads everything in Firefox mode except for Windows Update, it seems. But also, I think, turn off Javascript for known bad websites. Nice (if it still does that with my changing things).

The new browser looks good! It's like Firefox, but with a little added security, the ability to render like Internet Explorer if needed, and a nice new skin.

Edit: Just read that it worked for you. But mine worked in Firefox mode! Strange animals, these computers.

    BillyBob,

O.K., the code is IE proprietary, and that's why I can't get it working in any Gecko browser.

Okay, now I'm confused. This time I looked at the bottom left where it should have an icon for which browser mode is being used and it was blank! I right clicked and both IE and Firefox were choosable.

Maybe the beast knows it wouldn't render and play the music in Firefox mode, so automatically did it in IE mode? But then why does the icon not appear? Does that stand for "undecided? "

Edit: Hmmm, I went back and it still worked, then I tried to choose Firefox mode and I got a page saying they would restore the site within the hour. I tried to go back and got the same thing. Maybe more folks read these posts than we suspected! How else could they have reached their limit?
