I've had purchased/installed XP HOME for 3 years and then needed a new hard drive installed a year later at a legit computer sales and service company. They used THEIR own XP PRO version and when I protested they assured me it would not only be as good , but better than what I had. I've reciently found out now the product key won't match up and their version is not genuine so I can't download updates, etc...

Is there any way to reinstall my XP home without losing all my files, music. etc...

jones - Welcome to the Board :)

That's a nasty situation :( As you have Pro installed you cannot make a Repair install using Home and MS are not going to give you a legit number for software for which you do not have an original CD.

As I see it you have two options ....

Back up all your data, format the drive and install Home. One point to bear in mind here - unless your CD has SP 1 included you will not be able to use Windows Update as this now requires SP 1 and from October. I think. you will need SP 2 to be able to update. The download of SP 2 is ~200 Mb although you used to be able to order it on CD - don't know if this facility still exists.

The second option is to purchase an Upgrade to Pro and then speak with MS to update your install code.

A couple of other ponts - if you have Automatic Updates set you will still receive Critical updates, but that's all - no other updates, limited downloads from MS.

I thinkk you should consider reporting that 'legit' company to MS for Piracy - if successful they may rectify your situation for you ....
