I have an internal Generic (4 Port) USB Hub installed in the 3.5" bay of my desktop.
It seems to continue to work fine as long as I have my PC powered on, perform a 'Restart' or, perhaps totally power off for a short while. When working okay it appears under the '82801BA/BAM USB Universal Host Controller 2442'.
When, however I power off the PC say overnight and then start up the next day it is totally missing from the Device Manager or sometimes (I think) shows up as an unknown device.
To get this device operating again I have to uninstall the above 2442 controller then reboot the PC and let Windows recognise it and reinstall it. All is well then until next time. I've tried all sorts of tricks that my, very, limited knowledge will allow including searching for later drivers etc but, no luck.
I have managed to create a BootLog for the occasion when the USB Hub loaded successfully and also one for when it failed to load. The only difference between the two logs is that, for the successful load there are entries as follows:-
    Loaded driver \SystemRoot\system32\DRIVERS\USBSTOR.SYS
    Loaded driver \SystemRoot\system32\drivers\kmixer.sys

There are no 'Did Not Load Driver' entries in the failed load log for the above two.

I have no idea what this is telling me, if it is relevant, or indeed if I can do anything about it so I would be very glad of some moral support because I've spent so many fruitless hours on the problem and it's driving me more nutty than I actually am.
Operating System is XP Pro SP3
    Many Thanks

I agree. At the very least, recheck your wiring to make sure all the cables are securely fastened and if they are, go for another hub.

Many thanks for the two previous posts, the good intentions appreciated.
However, I do have a problem with the suggestions to replace the hub in-so-much as I am reasonably sure that it is not faulty in itself; after all it works perfectly every time until the PC is powered off for more than a few hours, but shut down for just an hour or so and the hub comes back up with no problem. My reasoning suggests to me that there is a problem further back the system, either with drivers (although I've probably exhausted this line of approach), configuration or conflicts.
What is baffling me at the moment is the fact that even when I uninstall and physically disconnect this 4 port hub, then reboot the computer, it is still showing under 'Universal Host Controller' > 'USB Root Hub' in the Device Manager. I've no other USB device connected other than the two pairs of built in USB ports.
Any ideas on what's going on ??.

Then try it on another computer and see what happens.
