I am trying to get a friends Gateway on line. I have done a complete restore and then loaded drivers that the restore did not install. Including the sound card. But the system still has no sound at all. Neither through the speakers or installed speaker. The tests all say everything is good but..... The cd player software indicates that it is reading the disk but that is all the indication I get I believe that the sound card is bad, several other components seem to be, but is there any way to verify other than a card swap????

Was the sound card working before the restore ? Which OS?

Is there also onboard sound - this should be disabled through the BIOS if a separate card is used.

Are you sure that you have the correct drivers for the card and OS?

If the soundcard came with the Gateway look on their site for drivers - it maybe a Gateway specific sound card.

Is the cd connected to the sound card?

The onboard speaker is the system speaker (generally) for BIOS beeps - does the PC beep on boot up?

What other components are 'bad' and did they work before the restore?

Card swap may be your only option - try that card in another PC.

Sorry I did not give all the info. The sound card did not work for some time before the restore but had in the past worked. The OS is ME. The system still, after restore, crashes fairly often and the A drive appears to be severely misaligned. I plan to swap it out tonight. The small cord from the CD is connected to the sound card. The system had been "worked on" by a friend before I got it so I have no ground truth. Inside it was massivly dirty with the air intake to the CPU almost completly clogged. Aside from these problems the system seems to be a nice one and now is at least operable so would like to get it up for them. Apprecdiate any suggestions. I did download the latest drivers for the sound card and installed them, the system seems happy with the drivers, just no sound. The system does not make any sound on boot up.

Could well be that the sound card is shot and a swap the only solution - for a m/c that dirty I would remove all the cards/connectors and clean up the contacts - on the cards with a soft pencil eraser.
I would be concerned that the CPU may well be partly fried through overheating - this may be causing the crashes.

Check that the onboard speaker is connected to the mobo.
