I am trying to help my Mom with her Gateway notebook. She is not savy on computers so she can't tell me much. I don't know much about the computer because it won't load up. It starts up and I see the XP start up and then it goes to a Gateway screen, then an error comes up "The system is not fully installed. Please run set up again."

She told me she thinks she had a virus and doesn't think she had a current antivirus program on it. She didn't care if it was reset to default or what so someone she knows tried to help her and "reloaded XP ". She doesn't know if it ran out of battery while it was loading, or what happened because the person left when it was running the install and she didn't know to watch it, now it won't run.

Looking at the stickers on the back, I see MFG date of 09/07. I found this link by the model # KAV60

    http://support.gateway.com/s/Manuals/gateway/GW_SJV01_QG_xp.pdf#page=3

I tried to boot up using F12, my options are:

    1. IDE 0: TOSHIBA MK1655GSX
    2. NETWORK BOOT: ATHEROS BOOT AGENT

I have the computer here with me. I have mine to use if needed. I don't know where to start. Please let me know if there is any direction any of you can lead me and/or if more information is needed.

    Thanks!!

No, your comp should have its own recovery partition and no need to use recovery media cdrom. The instructions are clear in the link I posted.

You must first determine IF you have a recovery partition:
An F11 prompt appears after completing POST when the computer is powered on.
thus, press the F11 key at boot. If you have one, then use it.

I do not see an F11 option at all. I beleive I do have a recovery built in. The friend told my mother she did have it and tried to recover with it. And the page you sent me to said- if- ■It is a notebook or desktop computer that shipped with Windows XP Service Pack 2 (SP2).

I saw SP3 somewhere on here when I tried one of the reboots

The first one that shows is F2 to enter set up... with that I get the InsydeH20 set up utility - under main my options are:

    quick boot "enabled "
    Network boot "enabled "
    f12 boot menu "disabled "
    D2D Recovery "enabled "
    SATA Mode AHCL

I enabled F12 and now I get boot options:

    1. IDE O: Toshiba Mk16556sx
    2. Network Boot: Atheros Boot Agent

If I shut it down by holding the power button while its loading, I can get to options:

    safe mode
    safe mode with networking
    safe mode with command prompt

the last know good config- but it does not work- it bring me right to what I get a along... system not fully installed.

Hi missy77. When you boot the computer do you see an option that tells you to press a key for recovery options? It should be either F10 or F11. Since F11 didn't work see if pressing the F10 key boots to the recovery partition to allow you to reinstall the OS.

If you can't boot to the recovery partition you may have to use a Windows XP CD to repair the system.

Thanks you guys. I went in and set the reboot back to default to be sure. I also read that I needed to use ALT F10 to get to the recovery. I was able to get there doing that, ALT with F10. YAY! So I got in there and was able to run the recovery and do a re-install of Windows XP. I got everything reinstalled and I did all the updates for them all too. I have it up and running nicely! Nothing like a clean computer!! :) :) Thanks for you help!!
