I am looking for a new Midi Tower case, for a PC I want to build, but all I get is 'Gaming' case on the description, without knowing what that means I am shying away from that choice.
All I want is a case with start button facility at the top, HD running light facility and extra USB connections on the front, don't want flashing lights ( other than HD light) .
    Any suggestions ?

This may seem a slightly odd suggestion, but go to PCSpecialist, - click on Configure a Desktop and then on Intel or AMD - click a budget range.

At the top of the page is a selection of cases, click on a case image for full details and images. Will surely help you to make a choice!

I would suggest you look in Ebay and just browse around. You should get a good idea of what is available.
I like the cases where drive slots are user friendly and don't need tools to screw in. Good cooling and large enough PSU for your needs. Plugin compartment in the front along with controls-easy access.
It's all personal choice but I use Trademe and Ebay to get ideas from when trying to sort out what I want. Neil.
ps. saves trips to computer shops.;)

For my new PC I am trying to decide whether to have one large HD , perhaps 2TB or two of less GB, one as Master and the other as Slave, I am looking for about 2 TB total for graphic work. Suggestions welcomed.

The important factor to consider is where do you keep your backups :) If you have a 2TB drive you will require up to 2TB of independent drive space (Internal or External) for backups. I say 'up to' as a lot depends on how much data you have; you will know your current data load from your existing computer so you are in a position to decide on a sensible size for your main drive bearing in mind future data acquisition.

Provided that you have a backup regime in place and need 2TB of disk space I don't think there is a strong argument either way for 2TB vs. 2 x 1TB.

FWIW my current desktop has 4 hard drives - 2 x 1TB and 2 x 500GB partitioned into ~17 drives, some for data, some for backups and others for Adobe Scratch disk and Adobe Cache (I use Photoshop). Backups are not stored on the same drive as the original data of course - that would be pointless as a drive failure would wipe out the data and it's backup!

Using SynchbackSE (there is a free version I think) my Data drive is backed up every hour, my Image drives (3 - capture files from the camera, work in progress and print bank) are backed up on a daily basis - all on a scheduled basis. The C:\ drive is imaged every Friday with Acronis running on a schedule.

At the end of each week I initiate a Group backup manually with SynchbackSE of all the data drives which do not contain backups to an external drive. At any one time I have 3 copies of all my data - belt, braces & a piece of string :D

Shortly I propose to acquire a new computer - this will have an SSD for Windows, etc., a 2TB drive heavily partitioned for data and 2 x 1TB drives (from existing computer) for internal backups. As before SynchbackSE will be scheduled to make the necessary backups and the Friday group backup will be maintained of course.

Thanks PeteC, that gives me something to think about. The idea of 1x2TB Internal Master Partitioned + 1x2TB Internal Slave , appeals to me ,choice of partitioning to be decided, I am not in favour of external drives, prefer the drives to be stored in the case.
Can I get away with no floppy drive, can't for-see any use for it now.I have two other PC's, other than the one I am on, that are getting old and I need plenty of storage because our over 50's computer forum is increasing in numbers.
I would like to link the new PC to the 10 Council owned PC's in our forum, can you see any hazards, ( other than Council bureaucracy) ?.

Floppy drives died many years ago - there is absolutely no need for them - nothing is offered on floppies these days and if you do have data on old floppies there is a good chance that it may no longer be readable (deterioration of media). I have not had one for years and no issues have arisen due to the lack of one - they are dead in the water:)
If those PC's are in the Public Domain security of your PC would be a major issue I think. However best you ask that question in the Networking forum.

Morning ( 8-15 am )PeteC, Doc & Neil, how can you have an 'Eco Friendly' hard drive?, it's just a chunk of metal, plastic, and some wires, it 'ain't' Eco Friendly just because it's painted green.
    I will check out 'Dabs'.
In the past I have used whatever Motherboard was in the case, but now i have to decide, so what parameters should I be looking at, I realise that it depends on what I want to use the PC for, but I need a starting point.
    Cheers.

Your selection of Mother Board will depend on your selection of Midi Tower case. ATX or Micro ATX.

To advise on M/B will require info/details of the case you choose. Neil.
