I hope this is not 'clear as mud'.

I have a home network consisting of 3 PC's and am running an FTP program called zFTP on one of these to allow User's to access an FTP Folder on this PC from a link on my Home Page which I will call - www.abc.com.

I have forwarded the port I am using for this, to this PC and if it is of any importance the gateway I am using is a Gigaset SE567.

To make sure there is no problem with changing IP Addresses, the link on my home page points to an account I set up with NO-IP.org called, shall we say, peterpan.no-ip.org which I understand is supposed to re-direct clicks on the link to the FTP Folder.

Unfortunately no one is able to access this folder.

The zFTP Program is fairly simple but there is one item I am unsure of. This is - 'Specify Address for Passive Mode', and I would appreciate if someone could tell me what should be entered here?

    Many Thanks.

From its page it says this...

Need to pass through a firewall? zFTPServer supports active and passive mode connections allowing administrators to specify both IP-adresses or host names for servers with dynamic ip adresses and/or behind firewalls (e.g. myserver.no-ip.com)

Even if set the correct IP addresses it still may not work. Most ISPs filter the standard FTP ports 20 & 21 nin order to prevent subscribers from running FTP servers. Thus you should use alternate ports for the ftp server, such as 2020 & 2121.

Your Webpage link would have to change to something like:
    Code:
    ftp://peterpan.no-ip.org:2121/directory-name
Also, realize that anybody will have access to your ftp directories. FTP is not secure. The main reason FTP is used is so people can upload and download files. If all you want is for people to download files then use a WWW server instead of an FTP server. Your ISP probably provides you with free server storage/personal Website space.

    Where is your Website hosted?

Thanks to all for the replies.

With the help I have managed to get it working now and will most probably be changing to a more secure system.

    Cheers.

In the 'Specify Address for Passive Mode' I entered the 'myserver.no-ip.com' as suggested by coolwaters.

I should add that I had tried this and a number of other entries and don 't know why they did not work before, so maybe there was something else which was not correct.

    Thanks.

It could be that the domain at no-ip.com was not yet fully activated when you first tried. Sometimes it can take several hours, up to 24 or more, for a domain to become fully active.
