Sometimes I leave my computer for 5 minutes long before the screen saver should kick in, and when I return the mouse pointer is frozen in place. Ctrl-alt-delete does nothing and I have to hold the power button in to shut off the computer and restart. This computer is running WIN XP SP1.
On the other hand I have a laptop running WIN XP Pro SP1 and it has NEVER frozen.
What causes the freezing of the computer? No programs are visibly open when this happens.
Is there a way to prevent this or fix it?

Control Panel->Power Options->Turn off or set to Never.

If the mouse is a USB mouse, there are option in Device Manager under USB to turn off the power saver..

If you are using a third party (non-Microsoft) screensaver, it may be a cause. Test by changing back to a standard Windows screensaver.
