I just recently formatted both of my drives on my PC to get all the junk out of them and reinstalled XP Pro on the smallest of the two that it was originally on.

I have only 2 USB ports on the back, both of which are used by either a mouse or keyboard, I also have 4 USB ports on the front, and after this reinstall they no longer work, My disk is running XP Pro with no service pack but I did use the upgrade .exe after the install.

    Any suggestions?
They had been working just before the upgrade, and even in the old install only 2 of them actually worked.

After a new install, you need to reload the MoBo drivers, If you built the PC you have them on a CD that came with the MoBo. Otherwise look on the manufacturer's web page.

You can use Everest to get the info.

I have no CD for it since it was a prebuilt system and I used everest to find out but thats nothing to help, these are on the front of my PC not the back and I don't think they have anything to do with the motherboard itself.

The usb controllers are an integral part of the motherboard, front and rear usb ports are connected to the motherboard via headers, and they do require the correct drivers to be loaded.

What info did Everest give for the motherboard?

Yes the ATA, Audio, LAN, VGA and Chipset drivers are there but no USB ones, do I just get the Chipset drivers?

Chipset, yes. But if you don't have the Drivers cd that came with the computer, you might want to consider updating all drivers.

As an afterthought, seems to me that SP2 will update USB controller drivers (someone correct me if I'm wrong), so you may only need to apply it. BTW, check the Device Manager for any errors re: usb

I have done as you have instructed and updated my drivers for the chipset and yet that didn't work, nothing happens when I plug anything in, I am going to try and reinstall XP on the second drive and see if that helps.

Perhaps autorun just isn't enabled? Did you look in My Computer for a new drive (assuming you're trying a usb mass storage device ..... which may be an erroneous assumption  ) ?

    Any errors in Device Manager?

    Is Service Pack 2 installed?

Shouldn't matter which hard drive the installation is on. The installation files will be the same.

    Yea its not there.

That is true but the OS install may be corrupt in some way, and not functioning properly.

It is running Service Pack 2.

The drivers are all fine, I am going to try and reinstall XP and go from there since, I can't find any other solution to the issue.

If that doesn't work then I shall possibly just buy my dad a new case. :p

    Thanks,
    Elite

An unlikely scenario - at least 2 worked before you reinstalled and if you have not fiddled with the connections the situation should be unchanged.

The connections aren't complex! Its not like a bomb and if you put the fuse in wrong its gonna blow up in your hands.

I didn't fiddle with the connections until after I reinstalled (which was needed) so the reinstall had nothing to do with it, if they were still working then when I booted the PC the devices would have powered up, which they don't.

I have gone and tried both of the chords on each set thus making it so each chord would be in it very original set of pins, and still nothing has happened, I am thinking that when I reformatted I had to do it fast since it was stormy by the time I was about to install and the PC got spontaneously shut off etc. Thus frying the ports or cable with a jolt of electricity.

Now you tell us :) Possibility that the motherboard was fried - not the ports or wiring.

When you look in Device Manager how many Root Hubs are present?

There are 3 present in there as well a a USB Composite Device, 2 SiS 7001 PCI USB Open Host Controllers, and one SiS PCI to USB Enhanced Host Controller.

I have no PCI USB anythings I have the 4 front ports and the 2 back thats it, I have a mouse and keyboard on the back so I need these to work so I can do stuff with my ipod and stuff.
