A friend of mine in Utah has a 1 year old computer with WinXP Home on it. She just got DSL today but is getting a terrible download speed of only 52 kbps. Are there any registry changes she could make to get better speed? TIA.

No but the DSL appearently is not installed or set up completely or properly.

Have her to join the BBS and post the name of her ISP etc. and allow us to guide her in correcting it. This will allow us to get an ipconfig from her to begin with.

She doesn't want to go to any sites right now cause she's afraid it'll freeze her computer. But she did tell me the following.

    Her ISP is Earthlink.

Pages don't load right but sometimes refreshing them does help a bit.

It caused her computer to shut itself down when she was trying to load a Java chess game on Pogo.com.

So she wants to play games at 52k but she don't want to come here and get it fixed so she can play the same game at 1500K.

Better send out a post to Merlin. Merlin is a member of our BBS.

But I don't think he wears a Gown and a long pointed Cap all with stars on them, nor do I think our Merlin carries a magic wand.

But if he does he is the only one that can help her under those circumstances!

Well she didn't know her speed was that slow when we were trying to play the game. That was before her machine got shut down.

Well it turns out she can't use DSL because her home is too far away from the phone switching station. The salesman told her she could get DSL but the tech people said she can't. I swear these companies will lie just to get business!

Now she has to return the modem and get her $ back. She's thinking of trying cable instead.

Thanks for the feedback. But certainly if she can get cable, she will get the speed. It pretty much works or isn't available.

That won't take magic, but compared to a modem, cable will seem like it. Smile!

She said their area is being rewired for DSL and she'll try again in a couple months.
