I have Windows XP on my computer. Recently my screen has been freezing quite frequently (about twice a day). What could I do to stop that freezing? Thank you very much. abm

Would you please fill out some more detail for us ......

You say that the screen freezes, presumably you mean the computer as a whole. Does it unfreeze itself or do you take some action? Are you doing anything specific at the time or it it a random occurrence?

How much RAM is installed on the computer ( right click My Computer > Properties)

How much free space is there on your hard drive - total size + unused? (My Computer)

How many processes are running after you have booted up? (right click a blank area of the Task Bar > Task Manager - bottom LH corner of TM window - Processes = ??

Have you cleared out your temp files recently? Start > Run > type in %temp% > OK. All the files and folders shown may be deleted - the odd file may be in use and cannot be deleted. Address is C:\Docume~1\User Name\Locals~1\Temp

Repeat for C:\Windows\temp - same rider about odd file in use applies.

Have you cleared out your Temp Internet files recently? Tools > Internet Options - General tab > Browsing History > Delete and select Temporary Internet files. Then go to the settings tab under Browsing History and set 'disk space to use ' to 50 MB

More can be done, but some feedback first please.

To PeteC: My freezing screen is a random occurrence. It can occur any time. 500 RAM. Five gigabytes of free space. After I boot up no process is running. Just a clean desktop. I have not cleared out my temp files because I don't want to lose my cookies. If I lose my cookies I will lose my saved passwords (is that correct?). Thank you. abm

It would be most helpful if you could answer the questions fully as we need background details to help in eliminating potential causes of your freezes. So .....

You have 5 Gb of free space on the drive - what is the total size of the drive?

When you boot up there are dozens of processes running - please do as I requested and post back ....
The temp files shown when you type %temp% in the run box are Windows temp files they have no relationship with Internet Explorer.
Are you running IE 7? in Browsing History you have the option to delete the Temporary Internet Files leaving Cookies, etc alone. There is a separate delete button for Cookies. Deleting just the Temporary Internet Files will not remove cookies - in IE 7 - I can't recall the situation in IE 6.
Generally yes - some cookies store login details for web sites, but most passwords are stored elsewhere if you are using Autocomplete to store usernames and passwords on forms.

Hi abm. Open Task Manager and click on the processes tab. Then look at the very bottom left hand corner of the Task Manager window. It tells you there how many processes are running. That's the number Pete wants.

No problem - we are here to help :)

I don't think anything can be clearer than my screen shot of Task Manager in my last post - click on it for a larger view.

But to clarify - right click on a blank area of the Taskbar and from the popup menu choose Task Manager. I run XP in Classic mode (aka Windows 98) so the colouring you see will probably be different, but the layout is the same and the number of running processes are shown where indicated on my screenshot - between the red lines - Processes: xx
