Dangit! This is happening more and more lately. Somehow, WinBLOZE (XP-PRO) gets confused and starts laying out my "Cookies ", "History" and "Temporary Internet Files" folders in my (username) temp folder instead of where they are supposed to be. To top it off, I have tried everything but a reformat and cannot get rid of them.

    Any ideas?

I noticed this, while repairing other people's systems, that if Real Player is installed, then those dirs show up in the user_name Temp folder. At least that's the common denominator of the systems I have worked on.

I uninstalled RealPlayer (which I've never used), but still cannot delete all of this junk. I did manage to delete most of it file by file before Tony's suggestion. There are still about 15 or so "stuck" files in 6 different folders, plus the index file that cannot be deleted. Here's an example:

    folder: C:\Documents and Settings\Administrator\Local Settings\Temp\Temporary Internet Files\Content.IE5\2BGNQP0R

    file:fastback_Mustang_W0QQcatrefZC6QQcoactionZcompareQQcoentrypageZsearchQQcopagenumZ1QQfromZR2QQsacategoryZ6236QQsamotorscategorymapZ6001QQsocolumnlayoutZ3QQsocomparecolumn[1] (YES, all one line!)

I keep getting a messagebox: "Cannot delete fastba~1: Cannot find the specified file. Make sure you specify the correct path and filename.

This is making me think somehow this filename was created with too many characters for XP to "find" it. If that's the case, how do I trash it? Repair console is no good (cannot navigate to the folder). I have a good backup, I could always format and restore...

I cleaned the computer yesterday in preparation for creating a Ghost image. I had those folders in the wrong place too but I didn't check for contents. They were either empty or were deleted with their contents without any objections.

RealPlayer has never been installed on my system and it (folders in the wrong place, that is) has never occurred prior to installing the most recent update to IE. No evidence but circumstancial.

Russ, give CrapCleaner a shot at those files. It'll be interesting to see if it can handle the job.

    Content.IE5\2BGNQP0R

Can you just blow away 2BGNQPOR rather than worrying about it's contents? If not and if CrapCleaner bombs as well, maybe MoveOnBoot can delete the files rather than telling you they ain't there.

All else failing, a cmd prompt and the RD command often gets rid of that sort of junk. So
    RD /S /Q "C:\Documents and Settings\Administrator\Local Settings\Temp\Temporary Internet Files\Content.IE5\2BGNQP0R "

    Got it!

I got poking around on MS's site and found a thread on how to get rid of files with names too long. Their suggestion was to rename them from a command prompt. I thought, why not try to delete them instead of typing in a 100 character filename? And it worked! I still couldn't delete the folder at that time, but after a few hours it deleted, too. Very strange indeed!

    Thanks for your help!
