I tried to hook up a mass storage device last week that was defective and XP would not recognize it. I sent the device back to where I bought it but now every time I boot up Windows wants to install the mass storage device. The installation always fails and I uninstall the drive from Device Manager just to have it come back on the next boot up. How can I stop this from happening?

    Hello mojo,

In DM, uninstall the USB Controllers then reboot, XP will re detect them.

If you have a printer connected, that'll re install again.

I tried that but "mass storage device" kept coming back. I did a system restore to fix it but now I'm having major issues with IE7. It now wants to keep reinstalling itself and fails everytime.

    Undo the Restore.

Did SR solve the USB problem? Not clear from your post.

If it did, after UNDOING the Restore, then un install IE7.

Restore back to where your USB problem went away. From there re install IE7.

    Regards - Charles

I'm beyond that...cannot undo the restore

Yes, SR did resolve the USB problem but it also made "windows updates" go nuts.

There has to be something in the registry that is messing me up.

    Resolved

I had two IE7s installed - the first was incomplete and would not uninstall due to a missing file. I used the file from the second IE7 to uninstall the first one and then uninstalled the second one. This took me back to IE6 and Microsoft update was then successful in updaing to a new version of IE7...
