Hi, I put an SSD into an external drive box and formatted it to wipe it clean prior to installing it as an OS. It is still in that drive box but it is not recognised by the system. Prior to formatting I saw that it contained two files, one of which was a small one, probably should not have deleted this.
The device manager shows the SSD as a USB drive and that it is working properly, however it is not populated and is unreadable. The disk management does not recognise it and I cannot write to it.
Saw somewhere that it may need to be initialised, how can this be done if I cannot write to it?
Can the drive be restored for use?

I formatted it by opening My Computer, right clicking on the drive icon and using the format option that came up. I had previously opened that drive and saw just two folders, I think one was labelled "Programs ", can't remember the name of the other one, but as far as I can recall it looked like it might have had to do with the drive itself.

The drive is a 64GB SSD and was taken from a PC where it held the OS only. It worked fine there and I want to use it with a different OS in the same PC.

Are you able to see the disk in Disk Management? It may need to be reformatted.

In device manager is shown as a specific hard drive or just generic "USB-to-ATA Bridge "? It may need a driver from the manufacturers website. Do you have another computer you could plug it into? Maybe try reseating it in the enclosure.

This what I see when I open the Device Manager and click Open Disk Drives where it is the first of three drives and is shown as:- USB device. Open the device and I see
    General: Device is working properly.
    Policies: Optimised for quick removal.
    Volumes: Blank.
    Populated:
    Disk:- Disk 2
    Type:- Unknown.
    Status:- Unreadable
    Capacity:- 0
    Unallocated space: 0
    Reserved space:- 0
    Driver Provider:- Microsoft.

I have searched for a driver and got the message that this is the best one.

ok lets try this. Click on Start-Run and run "cmd "

In the black prompt type in diskpart. Once diskpart runs type "list disk" (without quotes). Do you see the disk listed there?

I planned to use it as an internal drive and install to the OS on it. I had been using it with Win 7 64 Pro before removing it and putting it in an external enclosure, intending to wipe it clean and re-fit it in the PC and install XP Pro on it. Meanwhile I am using the original SATA HD which still has XP Pro on it.

Despite my best efforts Win 7 64 bit Pro did not work properly on my PC, so I am reverting to the original XP Prof.

Please, I want to keep the discussion to getting this SSD working and not to get sidetracked into one about Win 7, etc..

Download this and create a bootable cd, the reboot with the cd and see if it recognizes the drive:
    http://gparted.sourceforge.net/download.php

Even if the drive if not recognized by gparted cd, yank the existing drive in the computer and connect the ssd drive. Boot to the bios and see if it recognizes the drive. Save the changes and exit. Then boot from the xp cd and see if the installer sees the drive. It probably won't because you'll need 3rd party drivers for it on a floppy.

Note, there may be a hidden partition on the drive. Delete it prior to installing. Also, in order to install xp the drive must not be connected via usb.

Hi, I have done that which was suggested by the various respondents, but all to no avail. Just now I have installed a new SSD where I intended to put the troublesome one and it is working fine.
For the time being at least I am abandoning the other SSD, might come back to it later.
I now want to thank those who used their valuable time in trying to help me sort out that problem.
I will mark this thread as completed or shelved or whatever I find appropriate.
    Again many thanks to all.
    Ishmael.
