Got a question on formatting a hd.

Back in the days I used a debug C:800 ( I think) to do a low level format on the hard drive. ( I'm showing my age:eek:)

This did a complete wipe of the drive.

On my win7 system I can envoke the Debug program but dont know if I need to.

I have a drive that was taken out of a Direct TV system and it is a sata, 1TB drive. I want to format and use as a external USB backup file drive for my computers.

Will the format option in windows 7 format the drive for my use?

Yes. Just connect the 1TB drive to your SATA m/b as your OS W7 drive will be. No need to worry about slaving with SATA. Start your comp and find the drive and tell W7 to Format it. Should do NTFS and you're done. Neil.

You can connect the drive to a sata port on your motherboard or put it in a usb enclosure. The existing drive may not be NTFS. it may be EXT3 or EXT4 as some of these direct tv and other devices use an embedded Linux operating system. If it's not NTFS or FAT32 you will have to first delete the existing partition then create a new one and format it to NTFS.
