Hi, I am a bit puzzled here I am trying to install a new clean 2000 Pro onto a 40 Gig HD it has a old not really workable version of Win. 98 on it. On boot up Windows will give the boot option of 2000 Pro or Windows (98 SE). When I do a new clean install of 2000 Windows will not give me like in XP Pro the option to Format the drive so that I can regain the space on the disk from that old 98 install. It will just install a new clean 2000 for me. There are no Partitions on that drive all C:\.
Basically how can I Format that drive to get rid of that old 98 stuff.
    Thanks

You should get an option to "delete" the C partition and then will be promted to add it back and format.

Or you could boot off a win98 floppy and format it first.

Hi Steve, and thanks. That option is sort of there and I did try it 2 times but nothing happened.
I can boot from a 98 Floppy boot disk but I can not remember how to go about it to Format. I actually would like to try that, but I need a bit of help to get started.
    thanks

Are you sure it didn't get formatted by the 2K CD? I've never tried it but I wonder if you wouldn't receive an error like that if the drive was formatted to NTFS. If this is the case, I would think you'd have to use fdisk first to delete and recreate the partition(s) and then run the format command from the floppy.

Try booting from the floppy and then run fdisk and see what it shows for partition types. If it shows it being a non DOS partition, then it would seem that it's already been formatted.

Hi and thanks, Yes I think that was the problem I had already formatted the drive to NTFS and that was the reason the 98 Boot floppy would not let me format. I ended up sticking the drive into one of my other machines and format it from there and then re-installed 2000, after that I changed the size of C: made it smaller and used the rest of the drive as a Logical Partition for Programs and so on also moved the My Documents Folder there too.
It all seems to be working fine.
