I apologize for being here again asking for help with similar problems. I thought I had loaded anti-**** software about three weeks ago, but either it is not running, or I didn't install it correctly. A while ago, while doing a search for a movie (from Brazil) I thought I was getting infected. Sure enough, now there is **** running.

AdAware is not running right and it finds a bunch of stuff, but then it stops - before it cleans anything. I don't know if I have to reinstall it or what. Spybot only finds the DSO, and that doesn't cure anything.

Anyway, here is my HJT of a few minutes ago:

Reinstalled AdAware and ran it as well as SpyBot and SpyWareBlaster again.
Ran another HJT - listed below.

    (1) Is there a listing of items that should be deleted from the HJT log?
    (2) Should all the R0's and R1's be deleted?
    (3) Based on the "before and after HJT logs" of about a month ago, I would be tempted to delete the following from the following log.

Should I delete these items (using HJT):
    C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM\SPOOL32.EXE
    C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM\DDHELP.EXE
    C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM\PSTORES.EXE
    C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM\WBEM\WINMGMT.EXE

    Sorry for the delay.

Download the stand-alone CWShredder 2.14 from here. Save it to the desktop.

Fix the following with HijackThis, all other windows closed.

    R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Bar = about:blank
    R1 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Bar = about:blank
    R0 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Search,SearchAssistant = about:blank
    R0 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Search,CustomizeSearch = about:blank
    R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\SearchURL,(Default) = about:blank
    O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [PS1] C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM\ps1.exe
    O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [WinTask driver] C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM\wintask.exe
    O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [VBouncer] C:\PROGRA~1\VBOUNCER\VirtualBouncer.exe
    O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [version] C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM\UEOBUU.exe
    O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [cfgmgr51] RunDLL32.EXE C:\WINDOWS\CFGMGR51.DLL,DllRun
    O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [WinTools] C:\PROGRA~1\COMMON~1\WINTOOLS\WTOOLSA.EXE
    O4 - HKLM\..\RunServices: [WinTools] C:\PROGRA~1\COMMON~1\WINTOOLS\WTOOLSA.EXE

Make sure hidden files and folders are set to show, search for and delete the files and folders in bold above if found.

Open CWShredder, close all other windows and click fix.

Open My Computer, right click Local disk C: and choose properties, then disk cleanup. Check all boxes and click OK.

Reboot, surf a bit and post back with a new HijackThis log. Let us know if you're experiencing any problems.

    Dave,
    • Did everything you recommended, except for deleting a couple of the files that were not found, and everything is A-OK!!
    • Already had CWShredder, but I downloaded it again and ran it.
    • One thing that came up was a notice about a bad link to "AdDestroyer ", so I looked, and all I found were an empty directory with that name, and reference to it among the StartUp programs, which probably generated the notice when it couldn't run. I deleted both. I do not know what that was, and maybe I should have had it, but it was not complete anyway.

    Here is the new log:

    Thanks a million!

Scan again with HJT and fix the following entry.

    O4 - HKLM\..\RunServices: [WinTools] C:\PROGRA~1\COMMON~1\WINTOOLS\WTOOLSA.EXE

Download RegSeeker and extract to it's own folder. Open the RegSeeker folder and double click the RegSeeker.exe to start the program. Click find in registry and search the entire registry for WinTools and WTools. Select then right click and delete all.

Did you find and delete the Wintools folder?

Copy the contents of the quote box below to a blank notepad. Make sure the formatting remains the same.
Close it, saving to your desktop as:

    File name: runs.bat
    Save As Type: All Files

    Reboot.

Double click the runs.bat file to run it. A log will open in notepad. Please post the contents of that log.

I see no sign of AntiVirus or Firewall software. I strongly recommend you get both installed and updated. AVG antivirus and Zone Alarm firewall are both free, work well together, and are highly recommended by many.

Do you have Spybot Version 1.3? If not, download it from my signature and install. Allow it to load SD Helper. Open it up and click mode on the toolbar, then advanced mode. Click immunize in the left pane, then immunize again, this time from above with the green + beside it (always recheck this setting after downloading updates). Click the link below that for SpywareBlaster, download, install, enable all protection and update. Check for updates regularly and watch for any protection being disabled. Then, still in Spybot, click tools button, then IE tweaks and at least lock the HOSTS file.
Then download IESpyad.exe, double click to extract (it extracts to C:\IESpyad by default), open the folder, double click the ie-ads.reg file and allow it to merge into the registry.

That will give you some added layers of protection against unwanted parasites.

    (1) Scan again with HJT and fix the following entry.
    O4 - HKLM\..\RunServices: [WinTools] C:\PROGRA~1\COMMON~1\WINTOOLS\WTOOLSA.EXE
    << DONE >>

    (2) Download RegSeeker and extract to it's own folder. Open the RegSeeker folder and double click the RegSeeker.exe to start the program. Click find in registry and search the entire registry for WinTools and WTools. Select then right click and delete all.
    << Done >> Results:
    A. wintools -

    #2: HKEY_CURRENT_USER
    Software\Microsoft\InternetExplorer\ExplorerBars\{-very long alphanumeric-}\FilesNamedMRU
    {-} 000 wintools

    B. WTools
    << nothing found >>

<< I Did Not Delete The Above As I Wasn't Sure If That Was Correct -Please, let me know >>

    (3) Did you find and delete the Wintools folder?
I thought I had done so yesterday, but evidently not. I looked for it today with "search" and the Win Explorer, but did not see it even though all files and directories should display.
Yet, when I ran HJT the first time today, it found it. I deleted it, ran HJT again, and I believe it is gone.
    But then RegSeeker found something?!?!

    (4) Copy the contents of the quote box below to a blank notepad. Make sure the formatting remains the same.
Close it, saving to your desktop as:
    File name: runs.bat
    Save As Type: All Files
<< Done this far only - Haven't run it yet. >>

    (5) Do you have Spybot Version 1.3?
    << Yes >>

Dave, I'll do the rest later, but I first need to know if the items founds by RegSeeker are to be deleted.

    Thanks
    Alex

BTW, I also updated my SpyWareBlaster and enabled all the protection.

The only thing I wasn't sure of what I did was the updating. I tried to select manual, but don't know what I ended up doing. Again, I did select to protect against everything anyway.

    Hi Alex,

Those RegSeeker entries are nothing to worry about. ;)

How you doing on the Antivirus, Firewall and runs.bat log?
