I just want to try to save others a lot of aggravation with a solution that I just came up with after many hours of experimenting.

Every time I have upgraded Seamonkey I have lost the ability to use my bookmarks when using my existing profile. My mail works and the browser works but when I go to my bookmarks and double click a bookmark (or right click to open) nothing works. On the last upgrade to 1.1.4 I was able to create a new profile so the bookmarks worked, and then switch to my exiting profile and it was restored. However this time that trick did not work. The only thing that got it to work was copying my newly installed chrome.rdf file (from the newly created profile) over my old chrome.rdf (in my existing chrome folder of my exisitng profile).

I hope that the developers of Seamonkey will fix this for future updates.

Suggest you always export bookmarks to a file in a permanent folder, preferable on a non-system partition.

That's a good question. I, never, experienced the loss of bookmarks. However, I, always, uninstall the previous version, and then install the new one. Installing "on top" is not a good idea.
As for backing up critical files, I am all for it, but it should not be necessary, especially not every time.
I back up the bookmarks.html, export the address books as .ldif files, and save the .s (passwords), and .w files (form fill). Periodically, I, also, back up the Inbox and Sent files, which I rename, in case I want to add the old stuff to the existing files.

I upgraded to 1.1.6 by responding to Seamonkey asking me if I wanted to. I may be using incorrect nomenclature, because maybe it is an "update" instead of an "upgrade ". Sorry if I confused you. I did it by just installing over my previous installation, since it seems lass labor intensive than uninstalling the previous version and then re-installing with the new update.

I already do this after each few sessions, which is why I had a bookmarks file to open and test when using the new profile. Thanks for the tip.

I agree with Westside to some extent.

I routinely D/L new version, install to a NEW directory - start NEW with Profile Manager - try old profile - if it works, uninstall OLD version.
I presently have 1.1.5 AND 1.1.6 installed, with 1.1.6 using OLD 1.1.4 profile.
I have never lost a bookmarks file.
    Different strokes for different folks.

I am using a profile made exclusively for Seamonkey1.1.4 with my SM1.1.6.
Whatever one may call it, I first download the .exe file. Then, I uninstall, via Add/Remove the older version. I do not remove anything which is left from the previous version. Then, I install the new version using the .exe file to the same location as the previous one. This way, the plugins folder will become part of the new install.
I had used a Profile created for Mozilla1.7.12 up to v.1.0.9. I, then, started having some unusual problems with the browser portion (reported by only two other people, possibly due to Theme incompatibility), but never lost a single bookmark. In fact, I am using the same bookmarks.html file which I had been in Mozilla1.7.12.

If I was unclear, I apologize. I did not lose my bookmarks.html file. It remained intact in the safe place that I back it up to. I simply could not get it to work from the previous profile that i was using before i upgraded.

Thanks for the clarification, I have no idea what could have happened.
It looks like you have it working, so all is well ?

    Westside:
    Sounds logical -
if it works for you, great. In my case I may at times have more than one version installed so I install into a FRESH directory for comparisons.
