I've been looking for information on how to create a bootable CD for Windows XP Pro and found one particular post in this forum mentioning the use of an OEM CD. Unfortunately there was no subsequent mention of whether the OEM CD was usable or if the original poster was successful in creating a bootable CD.

I'd like to create a bootable CD for a Windows XP Pro system w/SP2 applied. The recovery CD was supplied by Dell, so it's not the same format as the install CD's mentioned in similar postings here and elsewhere. The target system is a Dell Dimension 4600C. I'll readily admit I'm not very knowledgable with XP... yet.

Has anyone been successful creating a bootable CD using an OEM recovery CD? What "gotchas" do I need to watch out for?

Thanks in advance for any guidance.

BlueKnight - Welcome to the Board :)

First off search the XP forum for Slipstream.

I found this on a Google Search where they were apparently successful.

I just did one with Autostreamer and a Dell XP Home disk.
Downloaded and installed this http://mhtools.knoware.nl/raptor/autostreamer/AutoStreamer.exe If you select all on the Dell CD and put it in a new folder on your HD. Open I386 if you have the SVpack folder Delete it if not forget about it. Download this http://www.neowin.net/forum/index.php?act=Attach&type=post&id=97109 open it there is a readme .txt in there. Extract the two files into the I386 Dell folder on your HD. It will ask to replace those two files Say yes. Close here all down. Sart Autostreamer point the second option to the folder you made. If should recognize it as XP. Next point it to you SP2 file either the full network download or if you have Microsoft SP2 CD mailed to you there is a folder in that one SP2.exe.Name it and tell it where you want the ISO file. Next it will startcopying>integrating.... When it is done the exit key will unblank. Now burn that as an image file.

I did it just to prove you could. I have my own XP Pro disk that I slipstreamed . I don't use the Dell CD.

    Excellent information

Thank you very much for the information. All were very relevant and I've got plenty of notes now. All I have to do now is find a slipstreaming program and I should be good to go. Thanks again. A big thumbs up to everyone.
