I do alot of downloading/uploading of things in and out of My Recieved folder!

Here was the day as I remember it:

I woke up with my phone ringing and my friend said "Can I send you a few things as I'm going to do some upgrading... " oviously I alowed him to and he sent me 6 or 7 files on MSN.

Later on that day I sent all his stuff back to him and started deleting the files but got to this one (called fg.avi) and it won't delete!

It says something like "The file is being used, please close all the programs that could be using it and try to delete it again" so I did and it still wouldn't delete! I know the file isn't a virus, but it didn't work on my PC nor when my friend got it back - must be corupted on the transfer - (if you must know its a video of me getting my legs waxed - if you help me fix this problem I'll let you see it)!

And now if I try to refresh My Recieved File folder the folder and sometimes the PC freeze! Inorder to then look at the folder again I have to go into TaskManager and kill the folder and reopen (which cant be too good for the PC).

    Thank you

    Gary!

Try booting to safe mode (usually a press of F8) and then deleting the file.

If that fails, make a note of the location - the full and exact path - then boot to the recovery console where you get a command line and delete from there.

WinXP does something strange with AVI files -- it's an obnoxious bug, but my money is on it never getting fixed because it's not a show stopper. Regardless, your problem is quite frequent.

    I have seen two solutions:

    1) Create a new folder and drag the AVI file into it. Now try to delete it.

    2) The fix for Windows XP not letting you delete .avi I've seen this coming up more and more all over the place so I figured I'd stick it here. Avi files (divx) can be trouble in xp. there is a fix to let xp behave much better so it's possible to move or delete large avi files. The obnoxious bug in XP that causes Explorer to read the entire contents of broken AVI files before allowing any access to them is caused by bad behavior of shmedia.dll. To correct this misbehavior in Windows XP, remove the following registry key. HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINESOFTWAREClassesCLSID{87D62D94-71B3-4b9a-9489-5FE6850DC73E}InProcServer32 This will prevent Explorer from loading shmedia.dll in response to file property queries on these files. Just an extra note, if you do a "search" for this key it will not be found, look for it manually it is very easy to find. As always newbie or not, if you FUBAR your registry its your own fault. This fix does work, I use it and have applied it to many XP machines.
