After installing Norton Antivirus 2005 I encountered two Windows 2000 problems.

Problem #1: After restarting the system, windows folders were in large icon view, not list view, which was my normal configuration for the past three years. I fixed this by changing the folders back to list view and they stayed that way.

Problem #2: since I installed windows 2000 three years ago, I have kept two folders open on my desktop, one for my d-disk and the other for a regularly used folder. These two folders would always be reopend after logging on. After installing Norton Antivirus, those folders never reopen automatically, as they used to before. In general any folder that is open at shutdown, is not reopened the next time the PC is booted. I have this problem whether or not Norton's AutoProtect is enabled or disabled.

I have not tried to uninstall Norton to see if things revert back.

Somewhere I read that for XP, in Folder Options, View Tab, there is a setting called: "Restore previous folders at logon ". I don't see the same one for windows 2000. I do have the "Remember each folder's view settings" selected.

I contacted Norton and they said "contact your system vendor ".

I think that something in the Norton install process changed a setting somewhere.

    Question:
Is there some obscure Windows 2000 setting, maybe in the registry, that does the same thing as the XP "Restore previous folders at logon "?

    Thanks,
    Bill

Bill - I gave up on Norton after being a happy user for a bunch of years. This sort of nonsense is one of the reasons.

My best suggestion at this point is for you to make a simple batch file that opens those folders as you want them and have it run as part of your startup. You can use switches to control exactly how explorer.exe behaves when run.

%systemroot%\explorer.exe /e,/select,e:\download for instance, would open an explorer window with my e: drive download folder open.

    Newt,

Thanks for the tip. I found some documentation on the XP version of explorer at: http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;314853

I tried Norton/Symantec technical support via email, technicalsupport@symantec.iseva.net. When I challenged their response that I should contact my "system vendor ", they said I should try their online chat at http://live-symantec.custhelp.com. Their chat person said that I should contact Microsoft to find out what was changed to cause folders to not be reopened automatically. Good idea, except Microsoft charges $99 for email support.

The email from Norton/Symantec was signed with a name, which I will leave out, and then with Symantec Authorized Technical Support. I asked the person at the online chat where he was located. The answer was India.

Time to bouce the email back to Symantec and have them forward it to someone in the United States.

    Thanks again for the tip.
