Dah. How do you get all folders to open in the smaller size (rather than full size) when you click on them?

    Hi Sussex,

You can draw all four edges to the disired size - hover the tool tip along each edge until getting a left/right arrow and "pull ", XP should remember that.

Doesn't work. I peviously had them all opening in the smaller size but something changed to make them open full screen size. I can't figure out how to make them open again in the smaller size.

Sussex138--Windows seems capable of remembering just so many customizations. You may be over the limit. The simplest way to increase the limit is by downloading and installing TweakUI.
    http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/downloads/powertoys/xppowertoys.mspx
In the left panel click Explorer|Customization and change to number to something like 5000.
If that does not help, here are a bunch of WAG's
1)This works for sizing New Windows. Do not know if it works for sizing folders.
Open two instances of the folder. Size the second per charlesvar's suggestion and then close the first. Then close the second. Now try opening a folder again. Any luck?
    2) Another idea is to follow charlesvar's suggestion but hold down Control when you close the folder window.
    3) Another idea that I have not tried is to size the window according to charlesvar's suggest, but then click Windows Explorer Tools|Options|View tab|click "Apply to all folders "|Apply|OK.

    Hi Sussex,

Yes, this is one of those stupid windows quirks :)

I know there is a system file that keeps track of the number of times a folder is opened, and there is a limit and can be reset. This limit was expanded with SP2 - right now I can't find the info on it. In the meantime, if you enter "size" into Help and Support, you'll get topics on folder size: "Minimize or Maximize a window" and "Resize a open window ".

    Regards - Charles

None of the above suggestions have worked, including TweakUI. I give up!!

What is strange is that this has happened to me before and I managed to correct it. But don't remember how.

Actually, will continue to try til the day I die. LOL

    Any new suggestions are welcome.

    Temporary solution ... Sizer v3.3.
Choose the zip version for easy uninstall (17 KB).

Have no experience with this application. May be over kill, not sure if it "memorizes" globally or unique paths. Originally designed for web development.

Possible another way to skin this cat.
Size your Explorer view the way you want it, create a short cut (could pin it in "start menu ". Now click on short cut, does it hold your size setting? If not, I think you could edit the shortcut properties setting ... but someone would have to provide correct phrasing.

Still lost. None of the above works. Just might have to live with it.

    Darn.

boot in safe mode and size/close the window - then open it. does it work? if so, check u'r startup stuff. many video cards - like ati - have a 'helper' program - like hydravision on ati - that will 'help' w/ window position/size/memory/etc that u DON'T want running ;)

or create a new account - admin level - and check w/ that one. if this works, then u DO have something running on the other account at startup. u can either find that problem and solve it or move u'r stuff to the new account

i'm curious as to u'r screen resolution ... is it larger than 640x480?

My screen resolution is 600 x 800. I don't understand that administrator stuff. I am a single user of my computer. Windows XP Home Edition.

    Hi Sussex,

Ran down the MS KB on this issue.

    http://support.microsoft.com/kb/813711/

I don't whether Jim's advice about using PowerToys works on the same reg entry or not. The folder positioning and size works on my installation(s), I had the same issue pre SP2.

This issue was supposedly fixed by SP2, do you have SP2 installed?

If you're going to modify the Registry, either create a System Restore point, or backup the registry manually: start > run > type regedit > File > export to a folder.

    Regards - Charles

Yes, I have SP2 installed when it first came out and never had any problems with it whatsoever.

The Microsoft link that you gave me looks like the best approach to resolve the problem, only I am absolutely paranoid of making any registry changes.

Need someone to hold my hand. LOL

    Thanks for your information.

[SIZE= "1"]If the application you are opening has a short icon on your Desktop, right click the icon and choose properties. In the ensuing window there is a scroll arrow to "Run" and use it to customise - Normal, Minimised or Maximised.

No matter where you now open the application from it will open according to these settings.

To customise the minimised window to a particular size, right click the Taskbar Button of the opened window and choose to change the size.

    Perhaps that helps

By short icon, I assume you mean a shortcut w/the arrow. Anyway, it shows that the folder is normal size, but it always opens maximum size.

Task bar icon does not give me the info that you stated. So couldn't try that. Thanks for the info.

I have just realised that my browser is opening all it's windows minimised, but the size of the minimised window is almost the same as the maximised window. I did not even notice that was a minimised window.
What else you have to do though, is to resize the minimised window, make certain it is the only window of that program that is open, then close the window (close/exit the program). When you start the program again it should open with a minimised window at the right size. If you close the program with a maximised window, it will open with a maximised window when you restart the program.

I think what you mean is that you are getting a "normal size" window. That is what I am trying to get again. A minimized window opens in the taskbar.

All windows open for me in the maximum size and I want them to open in the normal size, which is about 1/3 of maximum size.

Sussex138--charlesvar's MSKB fix and my Tweak fix should be the same, but it would not hurt to try it the MSKB way.
Now, I know you do not like to mess in the Registry and far be it for me to twist your arm. But if you first click (in the Registry's menubar) File|Export, chose a place to save in the SaveIn line and give the file a name, you will create a .reg file wherever was indicated in the Save In line. You just have to click on that .reg file, if you do not like the results of your changes, and want to restore the Registry to the way it was before you made any changes.
I understand from your response to Rista that you have that windows size setting at Normal. A Maximized window is full screen, but with title/menu/tool/task bars. And you cannot move it around by dragging the title bar or any edge. A Normal window is whatever size you create, which is what you are trying to accomplish here. It could be 1/3 of Maximized or any other fraction. And you can move it around. As you say, a Minimized window is only a tab on the taskbar.
(A Full Screen window is what you see when you click F11. (You can revert to the former size by clicking F11 again.) I understand you have tried clicking F11 to be sure you are not in Full Screen mode.)

I am still in full screen window mode whenever I click on a file and/or My Computer, Recycle Bin, etc.

Have not tried the Microsoft registry change yet. Would like verification that it actually works. But then I understand that every case is unique.

    Sometimes I think that I know everything - - - - - - - - -then I regain conciousness. LOL

    Sussex138--
Full Screen or Maximized? They are different. See my post above. If Full Screen, click F11.
