Starting yesterday, upon bootup an Explorer window opens to a C:\Program folder that wasn't there before. There's nothing in it. Windows says it's empty, DOS says it's empty. If I try to delete the folder, Windows warns that it might impact one or more registered programs and asks do I want to continue.

I have restored a previous registry, no difference. A search of the board turned up a note that the Program folder can cause Explorer to open on bootup, and a few other things that didn't pan out.

The obvious question is, can I ignore the warning and delete the folder? That would seem to be the next step, before going to Adaware & Spybot. I run a very secure ship here, and would be surprised if anything sneaked onboard.

    Hi Samson!

I have had the same problem to cure on a friends computer running Win98. He had installed a program that didn´t default to the correct folder.

If Your computer is speaking english, You probably have a default install folder "C:\Program Files ". This should have a large contents.

If an installer has installed a program to "C:\Program ", what You´re experiencing happened on my friends computer.

If this is the case, uninstall that program, delete the "C:\Program" folder and re-install the program. When the installer asks where to, direct it to "C:\Program Files ".

It may be something else but that´s what happened and the cure in that case.

Make sure there are no hidden files or folders in it, if you're sure there is nothing there then ignore the warning and delete the folder.

Just don't empty the recyle bin until you've rebooted a couple of times and checked to make sure everything is still working.

Why not just rename the folder first? If it should cause problems (though I doubt it will) you can always name it back either from dos or in windows.
