All my folders and files on desktop open with Windows Explorer. So I get the split screen and "Exploring-C:/Windows...." whenever I open a folder. Anyone know how to change that? Thanks for any help

toodles--Right click on a blank spot on your Taskbar (very bottom of your screen). Are either Tile Windows Horizontally or Vertically checked? If so, uncheck. And you should just be able to Close (X at the top right right) "Exploring-C:/Windows ".

I'm trying to get the files to open without clicking the x to close the tree on the left side. ...The tile windows options are not checked. Thanks for the reply...

First, open a folder and set it up the way you want it. Then click view>folder options and then click on the view tab. Make sure there's a checkmark next to the line that says remember each folders view settings. Then if you want all folders to open this way click on the like current folder button and then click ok. Then, while holding down the ctrl key, close the window. Open another one and see what happens.

I misread your question when I first read your question. Forgive me.
But now I am confused. When you say "split screen ", I think you are talking about the left part of the right part of the window in Windows Explorer. If you want that left part of the window to not appear, click View and uncheck "View as Web Page ". Then do what Zander has suggested, so that all instances of Windows Explorer will open that way.
On the other hand if you are referring to the left panel of the Windows Explorer window (the "Explorer" bar), you will have to click the X at the top of that left panel (not at the top right of the entire window--that was part of my original misunderstanding) to get rid of it. The Explorer window can take many forms (click View|Explorer bar to see the choices), but the only way to get rid of it is to click the X.
Or is it the "Exploring-C:/Windows" that you want to get rid of?

I want to NOT open folders with Windows Explorer but I DO want to view them like a webpage. So ...when I click a folder it should open the folder...Not open the folder with "Exploring..." Sorry if I've not been clear. Thanks for responding.

Well, toodles, you got in ahead of me so I'll change this post completely as I understand now what you want. You should be able to do like I said. When you open a folder, close the folder tree and click the view menu and then as webpage. I'm not running 98 right now and when I do, I never use it so the phrase "as webpage" may not be exact. If I'm wrong here Jim can help out. After getting it the way you want, then go through the routine I mentioned in my first post.

toodles--What I think I now understand is that you do not want to see "Exploring..." in the TitleBar, but the name of the folder you are opening. But I do not know how to help on that. Probably a Registry tweak.
    Regrets. :(

    Perhaps:

View> "folder options "....select each as follows in the order given:

    Click on the customize button

    Use windows classic

Open each folder in the same window

For all folders with html content

    Double click to open item

    Hit Okay and Close

there's a way to get rid of the LH pane by altering the properties - see this thread

if you banish the left hand pane like this you should still be able to get it come up viewed as a web page...

but even though I've re-read the thread several times I'm not sure if this is really what you're after

    when you say
what are you clicking on to see the files pls? - are these separate folders you have placed on your desktop, for example?

    best wishes, HJ

Thanks everyone!!..I found it on my own...The explorer option was set as default in the file types/open with window. I changed it to "open" and it worked!!! easier than I dreamed but of course I found it accidently. Thanks again.!!
