    Hi,
I have a 5-month old computer which used to work just fine, but now, I can't use my floppies anymore. Every time I insert one, it says "Please insert a disk into Drive A: ". I removed the floppy drive in the device manager and left Windows find it again, but to no avail. I tried to clean the drive too with a special floppy disk, but without result.
Also, I can't burn on CD-R or CD-RW straight by dragging files within Explorer, I now have to use the software provided with the computer.
I know, the computer is still under warranty, but I have to send it 1000 kms away to have it fixed...
    Thanks for your help,
    Samy

Since you mentioned dragging and dropping to CD, you must have some sort of packet-writing software installed, like InCD or DirectCD. This can cause all types of problems. Try uninstalling it.

    Hi,
That drag and drop feature comes Windows XP, I haven't installed it.
And what about the floppy drive problem? Could it have anything to do with incompatibility of drivers or something?

There is no software that comes with XP that allows drag and drop to CD's. If you have something like that, it must have been installed before you bought the computer. You may be referring to dragging files to the CD in My Computer for burning later.

You could try uninstalling the floppy driver and rebooting to let XP detect it again.

    Hi,

    Thanks for your answers.

Abraxas, yes, I used to drag and drop my files into My Computer for burning later. This is not working anymore.

Doodad, thanks for all the research you did on that floppy drive problem. Boy, it looks like quite a few people have the same problem I have, but unfortunately, nobody came up with any solution... If (or rather when) my computer gets fixed, I'll post a message.

    Thanks again,

    Samy

For the XP burning software....go to Properties for the burner, Recording tab and make sure "Enable CD recording on this drive" is checked.

    Hi Miz,
This option is checked, I verified it.
    Thanks,

In my search for a possible answer to these XP floppy problems, I ran across this post on another BBS:

"hi there- this might be a little late, but i've had the same problem with 2 computers- no problem with floppies/floppy drive/or software- it appears that somehow the BIOS settings get changed and your floppy access is changed to "write only "- have a look through your BIOS settings (hit the DEL key on bootup) and check if this is the case.... make sure it is set to "read-write" access- hope it helps :) "

I don't know how on earth the bios could get changed but strange things can happen with computers :D

Am still searching for an answer
