I run XP on my computer, and everything was running fine. Suddenly, my floppy drive stopped working. I had just reformatted a floppy disk and copied things to it. I put another diusk in, and it says "this disk is unformatted ". When I try to format it, the format "cannot be completed ". I've tried formatting from command prompt, and it says "track 0 bad - disk unusable ". It now does this for every disk, including the one I just formatted and put files on. I've tried these disks on my friends computers, and they are good. I have tried reinstalling the drive's drivers to no avail.

So what could have spurred my floppy drive to **** out? Please tell me there's a possibility its a software problem. I don't want to have to get a new floppy drive =)

    Thank you.

From the Desktop right click on my computer, select properties, click on the Hardware Tab when System Properties opens, and then click on Device Manager.

In Device Manager click on Floppy Disk Controller and then right click on Standard Floppy Controller and select properties. On the General Tab look at the Device Status Window, does it say that the device is, or is not working properly? Also make sure that "Use this Device (enable)" is displayed in the Device Usage Box at the bottom of the screen.

There should also be a Troubleshoot button on the General Tab, if you haven't already done so you should run through this to see if you can resolve your problem that way.

The second tab in the Standard Floppy Controller Properties window is Drivers. From here you can look at the details of your current Driver, for example mine says C:\WINNT\System32\DRIVERS\fdc.sys

From this tab you can also Update the Driver, Roll back the last update, or Delete the Driver.

    Hope this helps. :)

I'd already run through the troubleshooter. I'd check for updated drivers for the disk drive and when I checked for the disk controller there was also nothing. It stopped working from one floppy disk to the next so I don't think its an issue of outdating. Thank you for your suggestions.
