    hi everyone.....

i've installed XP and win98se in my computers back and forth a couple of times before... now im back with xp... but recently i have a problem with my cd-rom and floppy drives... it takes almost an eternity to read from the drives... when i inserted a cd-rom, it freezes a few minutes after it loads the contents of the cd.... as for the floppy, when i inserted a floppy and then double clicks the 3 1/2 drive in the my computer... it also reads a few minutes before loading the contents... it sometimes says the disk is not formatted, so i cant load it.... but the disk is already formatted and i've just used it a couple of minutes before...

what do you think causes these problems.... it doesn't happen before my previous installation of xp... what's wrong now?

is it device drivers? .... im sure it's not the hardware coz im sure it worked fine in win98se.....

need some help guys.... thanks in advance....

Sounds like XP's "Indexing Service" could be the culprit. To find out, go to Control Panel>Administrative Tools>Services, scroll down to "Indexing Service" and turn it off.

If it does eliminate the slowdown/freeze when reading from those drives, go back and permanently disable it. I keep it disabled on all my XP systems with no ill effects that I can see.

i've solved the problem on my cd-rom...... it's that cd autoplay... now my only problem is my floppy drive.... as i've stated from the original thread.... when i double click the drive or right click it... it says that the disk is not formatted.... then when i tried to format the disk... xp says the disk cannot be formatted.... i'm sure the disk is fine and guaranteed working on other pc's...... need some help or suggestions guys....thanks

This is always worth a try with recalcitrant hardware -

Go into Device Manager and uninstall the floppy drive - reboot and let Windows install it again.

If this fails to do the trick try uninstalling the floppy controller as well.

I had this problem on my m/c and never knew exactly how I fixed it. I remember substituting the drive for another which worked fine, replaced the original drive and that then worked fine too. May be an idea to check the ribbon cable connections as well.

    Floppy Drive Problem

Hello Ratstu34, I had the same problem you are having right now. My wife would tell me she couldn't save any files to floppy drive (a). I would come home from work and try to save some data to the drive and it worked fine. This went on for months, until it finally did it to me. I tried and tried to get it to save and it refused. I finally made a decision to bye a new drive and I haven’t had the problem since. When I pulled the old drive out I found out it had no bottom cover on it. I suspect that dust had contaminated the (a) drive blowing out the case every other month.
Hope this helps, floppy drives are cheap and they can become intermittent.
