    Hello everyone,

i recently came across a strange problem. I have an AMD system installed with windows 2003. Till recently its floppy disk was working fine. but since yesterday, it has started acting strangely.

when i insert a floppy disk for the first time after switching on the system. the windows explorer shows the actual data on the floppy. but now, when i take out the floppy, the windows explorer continues to show the same data of the floppy drive. If i insert another floppy with a different data into the floppy drive, the explorer reads the file and shows the data of the previous floppy. Moreover, when i check the second floppy into another system. the data on the floppy available is that of the previous floppy. CONFUSING. ok let me explain with example.

I have a floppy disk ( FLOPPY A) with a file viz. 'test.doc'. and another floppy disk ( FLOPPY B) with a file viz. 'sample.doc'. i start the system, and read the data of FLOPPY A. WIndows explorer shows me test.doc in the A: drive. now i remove the FLOPPY A.

Now there is no floppy in the floppy drive. and i click A: in my computer. The data shown is 'test.doc'. Windows does not give an alarm like 'THERE IS NO FLOPPY DISK IN THE DRIVE'. it reads test.doc in a normal fashion as if the floppy is actually there in the drive, whereas physically there in no floppy in the drive.

I insert a fresh floppy FLOPPY B into the drive. i try to read the data. On clicking A: i find the same test.doc file on this floppy also instead of sample.doc. i take out the FLOPPY B and read it in another system. The sample.doc is gone, the floppy has been overwritten with test.doc file.

on restarting the system, i can read floppy B with sample.doc. It means everytime i insert a fresh floppy, i need to restart the system.

IF someone can help kindly give me a clue. if this a virus attack, than i shoulc say that my system is updated with latest definitions.

kindly let me know what to do.

    regards
    amar

Open Device Manager and click the + beside Floppy Drives to open it. Then right click the "Floppy Disk Drive" and select "Uninstall. "

Repeat that process for the "Floppy Disk Controllers" and uninstall the Floppy Disk Controller.

Then click "Action" at the top toolbar and click "Scan for Hardware Changes. "

The floppy drive will be detected and installed with a new driver.

If this doesn't cure the problem, it's likely that you floppy drive is going south and is not able to detect a disk change. They're cheap fortunately.
