When I plug my little flash USB drive into the USB port on the front of my pc, it lights up, but it's not recognized. I get a message to "insert disk" in that drive. I've used it in the past with no problem and deleted the files I copied to it. I'm wondering if it needs to be formatted?

Full steam ahead. Batten down the mainsails and hoist the anchor. In other words, go for it :)

Just watch, less than 512Mb should be formatted as FAT16, over 512Mb should be formatted as FAT32, don't try formatting as NTFS (you should not get the option to format as such).
