    I have a Win98SE system with IE6 SP1
I tried to install macromedia (Adobe) Flash Player 8.
I have used Tools/Internet Options/ Security and checmarked both Download Signed Active X and Run Active X Controls Plug Ins.
I can't install Flash Player 8 from Macromedia site. I get a RED X and my other settings are Default for Security.

How can I get an Active X on my system which would allow install of Flash Player?

Know the feeling princessmandi8, had this same circle with XP with May/2006 update (KB913433). IE6 refused to accept a ActiveX / web install. I had security set to Trusted site / accept anything and still no go. I then installed Shockwave / Flashplayer combo (download /.msi local install ) which provided the current version, but XP auto-notify update went in a endless loop. It continued to request I install the latest patch, but when attempting to install patch, it failed with following .. "The version of Macromedia Flash you have installed does not match the update you are trying to install ". As soon as I cleared the message, XP/auto notify would resend the patch request. This loop went on for a month. Finally found a solution at CastleCop site via supplied URL from a poster, Flash Player 8.0.24.0 (Complete Standalone Installer). After downloading and successful install, XP/auto-notify cleared the security patch request automatically... finally I was a happy camper.

princessmandi8--I think Dennis L's link is a good one.
But if you only want Flash Player and not Shockwave, consider the following.
The download page for Flash Player requires ActiveX controls to run before a download is permitted. The easiest way to do that is to put www.adobe.com into your Trusted Sites. Now you should be able to download Flash Player. (I suggest you disable the box to also download Yahoo! Toolbar at the same time.)
And if you are on a page that uses Flash Player files, its URL will also have to be in Trusted Sites in order to see the action. Of course, if you do not Trust the site, do not put it into Trusted Sites.
(When you do put a site into Trusted Sites, be sure the box at the bottom "Require Server Verification..." is not checked.)

    Thank U so much,
I added https://www.adobelcom to "Trusted" sites.
First, I didn't click the "verification "......didn't allow Install.
Thsn, I unchecked "verification "......and it worked!!!!
I appreciate what U did for me
