    Hi,
    My CDrom on my laptop stopped working a few months ago, this didn't cause me that much trouble as I mapped the drive on my Desktop PC and have been using that (have a SOHO network)
    However the OS (win2k) on my laptop has now started to play up and will not boot (bsod saying inaccessable boot device!) now normally I'd repair using the original win2k CD, but cannot because of the broken CDrom, and the mapped network drive is only reconised after booting into windows.
    Is there a way I can fix my OS using my desktop PC's CD?

    Many thanks

    You would need to boot from a floppy that has all of the Windows Networking files on it.

    The biggest problem will be finding DOS versions of your laptop's network card driver

    What kind of laptop is it ?

    Remote Recover will do the job but you'd need the paid version rather than the free read-only one.

    Hiya Newt.

    Don't know if this makes a difference, but my laptop is dual boot -
    same as my desktop (Win2k/WinXP)
    And I can boot up WinXP, and access Win2k through it. maytbe there is a way of fixing through WinXP.

    many thanks

    Possibly. Is XP working OK? If so, is the PC a standard dual boot where XP was loaded after 2K?

    I'm mainly interested in finding out if your 2K boot files were overlaid by the XP version as they should have been if you installed XP after 2K.

    The error is interesting if you have a standard dual boot system and XP will boot while 2K won't.

    Depending on exactly how you set things up, I think trying to load the appropriate recovery console to the hard drive then booting to it and running fixboot is your best bet.

    Also, post a copy of your boot.ini file on here.

    Hi Newt,
    Win2k was set up first from a slipstream cd I learnt how to make on these very forums :cool:
    XP was installed next and they have both been working fine for about a year.
    The other day I shut the lid on the laptop, which is set up to hibernate the OS and when I next opened it up two days later it would not resume. After two failed attempts it asked me if I wanted to delete the hibernation file and boot normally - I said yes.
    This is when the problem began and I can honestly not remember which OS I was on at the time. :confused:
    My XP is still running fine apart from on every boot it runs a disk check on my C drive which is the partition that has Win2k on it.

    I'll just hook the laptop up to the network and post my boot.ini

    My boot.ini
    [boot loader]
    timeout=10
    default=multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINNT
    [operating systems]
    multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINNT= "Win2k Design" /fastdetect
    multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(2)\WINDOWS= "XP Games" /fastdetect

    I have also checked out the hiberfil.sys on both OS's
    Win2k - 491,056KB 18.03.2004
    XP Pro - 491,060KB 30.03.2004
    So I imagine it was Win2k hibernating that originally caused the problem.
